At
Berkeley Lake Elementary, we want to recognize and support all students in a
positive way. In addition to the many and varied things that are done by the
regular and support staff in their classrooms, there are several school-wide
programs in place to recognize students.
Birthdays
Students
will have their names announced on the morning news show. Summer birthdays will be recognized the last few weeks of school.
McLeod's McMarvels
A
McLeod's McMarvels award is given to a child who displays exemplary role model behavior,
which may include extraordinary effort, improved grades/behavior, or achievement
of a new skill. This award is limited to those students who exhibit those
behaviors. Teachers have the opportunity to choose a McLeod's McMarvels weekly, but
it is not required. The reason for the award will be noted on the certificate.
The child’s name is read on the morning broadcast followed by a ceremony to
award the student a certificate, pencil and ribbon.

Safety Patrol
The Safety Patrols serve
throughout the school building before and after school to help maintain a safe
environment. Every day they arrive earlier than all other students and
remain later to provide this valuable service. They can be seen in the
hallways helping to maintain order, in the car rider line assisting students as
they exit cars and enter the building, with the school buses ensuring safety,
and in the cafeteria assisting with students having breakfast. They are
responsible for raising and lowering the United States flag and Georgia flag
daily and announce the arrivals of school buses each afternoon. They run
errands, deliver messages, and help carry items for faculty and staff.
During the school day they serve as role models and leaders to students.
The qualities exemplified in Safety Patrols include: leadership, courtesy,
friendliness, self-discipline, good citizenship, responsibility, and
dependability.
Pizza Hut
"Book It" Reading Incentive Program (K-2)
Pizza
Hut "Book It" program offers children an opportunity to earn a free
personal pizza by reading a predetermined number of books (at teacher’s
discretion). The program begins in October and ends in March.

Six Flags
"600 Minutes" Reading Incentive Program (All grades)
Six
Flags gives a free ticket to each child who reads and records 600 minutes of
reading between specified dates in January and February. The reading must be
done outside of school.
Reading Buddies
Some
classes in different grade levels meet during the year to support each other in
reading activities. Sometimes K/5 work together, or 1/4, etc. Participation in
this is optional and left to the discretion of the classroom teachers.

Accelerated Reader
Recognition (K/5)
This
recognizes students who have obtained a certain number of points for their grade
level. Prizes are awarded for various levels and the student with the most
number of points per level at the end of the year receives a gift certificate to
an area book store.
Summer Reading
Program (K/5)
Each student who participates in
a summer reading program at any Gwinnett County Public Library, bookstore, etc. will receive a prize/award at school during the next school year.
Each student should register for one or more summer reading programs and keep a
record of books read and turn this into their teacher at the beginning of the
next school year, as well as to the library or store
where they first registered. Summer reading will be promoted to the students at
school during the last few weeks of school. Parents will receive summer reading
book lists and notification of the summer reading programs available for their
child with the final report card.

Peer Mediators
The Peer Mediation
program is designed to help children find positive ways to solve disagreements
on their own. Peer Mediators are chosen from interested 4th graders to be
trained for service during their 5th grade year. After reviewing all applications, a committee selects
16 -18 students to receive mediation training. Once the training is complete,
these students will graduate as peer mediators and serve as mediators
approximately once every 2 weeks for any 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade student having a
dispute with any other student. Second grade are included for mediating
problems beginning 2nd semester. Mediation takes place during the 5th grade
teacher-directed P.E. segment.
Student Council
Student Council
consists of one student from each 3rd, 4th and 5th grade classes. We appreciate
the involvement of these students in the leadership of our school. Hat Day for
Unicef, Thanksgiving Can-A-thon for local Cooperative Ministries, Adopt-a-Road
(South Berkeley Lake Road), the Empty Stocking Fund, and recycling are just a
few items on this year's agenda.
