NEW: Tumblebooks -  We have a new online subscription to TumbleBooks. These are animated, talking picture books as well as some audio chapter books. The website also includes educational games, reading comprehension quizzes and a new Record-a-Book function. There is a username & password required.  Please ask your student's teacher for this information.

Search Engines:

Yahoo Kids - A safe search engine for kids. Also has lots of Holiday project ideas for teachers and parents. Don't forget the almanac.

Ask Kids -An easy to use search page for kids - can ask natural language questions. Such as, "Why is the sky blue?".

Google - The most used search engine at this time.  Searches for web pages (with a filter if you choose), images, and so much more.  

Answers - Online dictionary, encyclopedia and more.

Parental Control Product Review  - This site gives a 'features' list for programs to help you filter what  your kids can access on the Internet along with a comparison list.  Also gives access to each of the programs below via their sites.

Center for online child safety.  Get Net Wise offers tips for parents and educators, reviews of filtering software, and many other online child safety resources.

Homework Helpers:

Multiplication Games - Third graders at BLES have been using and enjoying these games in the computer lab.

Subtraction Game - First graders at BLES have been practicing their subtraction skills and have enjoyed this game.

Online Dictionary - Type in the word or phrase for quick definitions.  English, Medical, Legal, Financial, and Computer Dictionaries, Thesaurus, Acronyms, Encyclopedia, a Literature Reference Library, and a Search Engine all in one!

Zoom School - Enchanted Learning has put together an incredibly comprehensive page.  From planets to states to penguins to rainforest, it seems to have everything that is studied here at Berkeley Lake!

Yahoo School Bell - Excellent source of games and homework helpers.

Yahoo - wonderful online dictionary source - on the Your Search line, type: define and a word and you will get the definition. see below  Also a way to search for topics for students in upper grades.

 

 

A+ Math - Helps students improve their math skills interactively.  Add, subtract, multiply, divide, square roots, round; geometry, algebra, money; flashcards, games, worksheets, homework helper and more.

MegaKids - Drills in addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.  At the end of the drill, you are told the number of errors and completion time.  You are retested on incorrect answers.  Certificates can be printed with results.

Funbrain Games - This is a good site for practicing numbers, words & more.  Games such as Math Baseball and Change Maker are both challenging and fun.   

Guide to Grammar and Writing - There are explanations for each rule of grammar, everything you ever wanted to know, from sentence and word parts to clauses and phrases and punctuation and more.  Includes interactive quiz at the end of each section.

Punctuation Paintball - Students in 3rd grade are practicing their punctuation skills using paintball to put upper case letters, ending marks and quotes in place.

Biography.com - Got a name?  Get the facts!  A searchable database from A&E TV and Cambridge Biographical Encyclopedia.

Ditto.com - A family-friendly picture search engine.  Each picture is viewed before being included on this site for suitability.

Britannica.com - Britannica Internet Guide, and all articles in the Encyclopedia Britannica included.

Brainpop - Over 120 fun, educational, fast moving movies on many topics in science, health, technology, and more.  Each section has an activities page and experiments.  Children can send questions or ideas for new movies.  Earn points for prizes.

FunBrain - Fun educational games, using math, grammar and social studies.  Choose your level, change it at any time to minimize frustration or challenge yourself.  Great site to play and learn!

Zoo Atlanta - Zoo Atlanta has a website that is jam packed with great information.  Check out the Kids Page for lots of fun activities.

Yahoo Games - Fun and educational games such as Chess, Word Search, Mazes, Checkers and more!

Blue Mountain Arts' Electronic Greeting Cards - Send personalized electronic greeting cards.

Clifford the Big Red Dog - Reading, coloring, games, and behind the scenes of the popular cartoon!

Discovery Kids - In the Yucky! section, children can make Creepy Crafts, Revoltin' Recipes, Icky Experiments and more; in Explore by Subject, children can check out Animals, Dinosaurs, Space and more.  Check it out!

Crime-Fighting McGruff - This site provides tips on dealing with strangers, bullies, getting-along, how to use the web and back-to-school tips.  Also, children may color, read comics, play games and write a letter to McGruff.

Scholastic - Fun and educational - contains links to popular books such as Harry Potter, Captain Underpants, Magic School Bus, Animorphs and many more!  Games, cards, news, contests and much more!

PBS Kids - Join the gang at PBS and learn about the show's characters, facts about animals, games, drawing, and coloring pages.

Draw and Color with Uncle Fred - By the creator of "Barney Google and Snuffy Smith", "Uncle Fred" Lasswell has created a page that includes numerous fun cartoon drawing lessons.
