Information and Promotion Requirements
GCPS Info
Grades 1 and 2 and Special Education
Students in 1st
grade will take the CogAT (Cognitive Abilities Test) September 21-25.
Students in 1st
and 2nd grades will take the CRCT April 20-22 in the areas of
Reading and Math, but there are no promotion requirements. Promotion of
special education students is based on their Individualized Education Plans (IEPs).
Grade 3
Students in 3rd grade will take the CogAT
(Cognitive Abilities Test) September 21-25.
Students in 3rd grade will take the Iowa Test of
Basic Skills (ITBS) October 19-28.
Students in grade 3 will take the CRCT (Georgia’s
Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests) April 13-19. The Reading
section of the CRCT checks the child’s ability to read with critical analysis,
his/her understanding of vocabulary, and how well he/she can recall
information. Students must score in the “Level 2 - Meets Expectation”
range or higher on the Reading subtest of the CRCT to meet one of the criteria
for promotion. Successful completion of the 3rd grade AKS will
also be used to determine promotion.
Students who do not pass the CRCT will have the opportunity
to attend summer school and retake the test. If a student is still
unsuccessful after the retest, an appeal may be conducted through the Student
Support Team (SST) process to determine whether he/she will be promoted or
retained in the 3rd grade.
Grade 4
Students in 4th grade will take the Gateway
(March 17) and CRCT tests (April 13-19). In order to be promoted, students
must receive a score of 430 or higher in Language Arts and a score of 469 or
higher in Math as well as score in the “Level 2 - Meets Expectation” range
or higher on the Science and Social Studies CRCT. The Gateway test and the
CRCT test are based on work that is learned in the classroom.
Students who are unsuccessful will have the opportunity to
attend summer school and retake only the unsuccessful portions of the
tests. Students who are unsuccessful after the summer retest will not be
promoted to 5th grade. These students will receive extra help
the next year through a transition program and will have the opportunity to take
the test once again in the spring.
Grades are extremely important because if a student makes C's
or better in all academic subjects throughout the school year, an automatic “Review
Procedure” is launched where a committee decides promotion/retention.
Grade 5
Students in 5th grade will take the CogAT
(Cognitive Abilities Test) September 21-25.
Students in 5th grade will take the Georgia
Writing Assessment on March 3, 2010.
Students in 5th grade will take the CRCT April
13-19. Students must score in the “Level 2 - Meets Expectation” range or
higher on the Reading and Math subtest of the CRCT to earn promotion.
Gwinnett County has set its own passing score on the writing test to reflect the
level of writing our teachers have said should be expected of 5th
grade students in our schools.
Students who are unsuccessful on the writing exam will
receive extra help and be given the opportunity to take the test again in
May. Students who are unsuccessful on the CRCT will have the opportunity
to attend summer school and retake the test necessary for their promotion.
If a student is still unsuccessful after the retest, an appeal may be conducted
through the Student Support Team (SST) process to determine promotion.
