Suzanne Cottrell's First Grade Class

I grew up in Mobile, Alabama and went to school at Auburn University. I graduated from Auburn in 1999 in Elementary Education. I moved to Gwinnett in 2000 and began teaching Kindergarten at Lawrenceville Elementary. I have been at Cooper since 2003. I've taught first grade for 10 years now and love teaching 1st grade!

The Cooper first grade team works hard to help all first graders succeed.  Students are encouraged to do their best while given the opportunity to learn in a comfortable and safe environment.  We strive to meet the needs of all learners through literacy centers, hands-on experiences, and a variety of problem solving techniques.

At the beginning of the year rules and expectations are immediately put into practice.  Students are responsible for following the rules and accepting consequences when expectations are broken.  We work hard to respect the learning environment of our peers.  Communication is key to maintaining a positive relationship between parent and teacher.  Every Friday a weekly newsletter will be sent home in your child's STAR binder. The newsletter includes important dates, schedules, and upcoming events.  The newsletter also lists homework assignments and due dates.  The STAR binder will keep parents informed of their child's behavior, progress, and work habits.
