The annual County Dance Day for Gwinnett County Public Schools high school dance programs will be held at the Peachtree Ridge High School Theatre on February 12, 2011 at 7:00 PM. GCPS-TV will be filming all the high school dance performances for a later broadcast. The schedule for County Dance Day is as follows:
9:00 AM - 4:00 PM - Technique classes in ballet, modern, jazz, lyrical, hip hop and ballroom
4:00 PM - 6:00 PM - Rehearsals
7:00 PM - Dance Performances
The goal of County Dance Day is to give students world class instruction in a variety of dance forms. Students will leave Dance Day with a stronger dance technique and will be exposed to many different types of dance forms taught by dance professionals. County Dance Day began in 2009, and Brookwood High School was the first school to host the event. Another goal of County Dance Day is to promote dance in our county. Currently, dance is offered in twelve GCPS high schools. Dance, along with all Fine Art classes, is so important to the well-being and education of our students. Dance instills discipline in students and provides much needed exercise for the iGeneration. Many students find a way to express themselves in the high school dance classes. Dance students continue to receive dance scholarships to colleges, renown dance schools, and universities to pursue careers in dance.

North Gwinnett High School Dance, under the director of dance teacher, Reyna O’Leary, had 26 dancers travel to Miami to perform in the Discover, Orange Bowl Half-Time Show on January 3, 2011 at the at the Sun Life Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida.
The dancers worked hard for 10 hours during the first day in Miami by taking six masters classes and performing in the evening. Senior, Maddi Hallmark, was asked to be a teacher’s assistant and was asked to work on stage with other dancers. The Orange Bowl dancing staff identified freshman, Michelle Ellis, as an amazing dancer and allowed Michelle to assist on stage during the rehearsals and classes.
The North Gwinnett High School dancers rehearsed a total of eleven hours for the half-time show on the second day in Miami. On Day Three, they rehearsed in costumes in the hot Florida sun for most of the day and were given a small respite prior to loading the bus for the game that evening.
One photograph shows the dancers in the stands prior to the pre-game festivities and another one shows the dancers performing at half-time.
After the half-time show Freshman Maggie Gomrick, Chelsea Ciminera, and Haley Wright interviewed on TV by commentators of the Bowl Games of America.
Congratulations to the North Gwinnett High School dancers for representing their school and community so well.
