About Dr. Beverly Johnston: CRAZY FOR YOU will be Dr. Beverly Johnston’s last show to direct at Collins Hill High School after a fourteen year high school teaching career. She will be opening the Theatre Arts department at the new Mountain View High School. Dr. J., as she is fondly called by students, has directed over 40 plays and musicals at CHHS. She received the Collins Hill Foundation Grant last year for her production of Pinocchio for underprivileged children. Dr. Johnston also taught Video Production at CHHS for several years, and was instrumental in developing an 8-course Video Broadcasting curriculum for the county.
Before coming to GCPS, Dr. Johnston was chair of the Department of Communication Arts and Theatre at Louisiana College, the only Baptist affiliated college in Louisiana. There she served on the board of Louisiana Public Broadcasting. Dr. Johnston completed her Ph.D. in Drama at the University of Georgia, teaching playwriting, acting and introduction to theatre there while completing her degree. Before pursuing her Ph.D., Dr. Johnston taught at North Central University in Minneapolis, while acting professionally.
Dr. J. graduated summa cum laude from University of Southern Mississippi at age 19, and immediately began teaching there with a Teaching Assistantship, while she worked on her master’s degree. She completed her masters at USM at the age of 20.
Over the course of her theatrical career Dr. Johnston has directed and/or acted for educational, children’s, professional, church and community theatres, as well as having done several television commercials.
