Gwinnett County Public Schools band programs offer a structured band curriculum beginning with instrumental instruction in the sixth grade and progressing through the eighth grade. Each high school band program ultimately stems from students receiving a superior general music education in the elementary schools and continuing with the development of the fundamentals of music during the middle school years. Each high school cluster is provided with materials and necessary facilities to achieve a high performance standard. Through quality instruction, parental partnership and community support, Gwinnett County Public Schools band students are offered opportunities for success and development as outstanding musicians and performers. High school band helps students develop their leadership and collaborative skills, gives them a sense of pride in an organization, and teaches them the importance of responsibility and good citizenship. Through involvement in GCPS band programs, successful high school experiences are enhanced and improved for each student. Each program strives to engage and inspire students to achieve individual and group goals, and to provide them quality music experiences resulting in a life long enjoyment of music. ![]() Middle School Band Program DescriptionGwinnett County Public Schools has one of the most active and successful middle school band programs in the state of Georgia. Each year, over 6,000 students participate in band from 20 different middle schools system wide. Students in GCPS can begin band instruction in the sixth grade and continue band with highly qualified directors through the eighth grade. In addition, it is the hope and desire of the middle school band directors that their students continue band instruction at the high school level. Students who participate in the middle school band programs have a variety of performance opportunities, both with the group and as an individual. Most programs present several concert performances per grade level throughout the school year. In addition, many programs participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association’s “Large Group Performance Evaluations” and other contests and festivals throughout the state. Some schools offer extra curricular music programs such as jazz band, pep band, and other small ensemble performance opportunities. Individuals are encouraged to participate in GMEA sponsored events such as Solo and Ensemble Festival, District Honor Band, and All-State Band. Students from various schools also have the opportunity to attend the University of Georgia Middle School Band Festival held each December. Middle school bands in Gwinnett County have reached a high standard of accomplishment by continually achieving “superior” ratings at all of the Georgia Music Educators Association adjudicated events and by placing a large percentage of individuals in the GMEA District and All-State Bands.
