GCPS SpotlightLanier Middle School Percussion Ensemble
The Lanier Middle School Percussion Ensemble, under the direction of Hunter McRae, performed at the 62nd Annual Midwest Clinic in Chicago on Thursday, December 18th. The Midwest Clinic, an International Band and Orchestra Conference, is the largest instrumental music education conference in the world. It is regularly attended by 15,000 music educators, students, and professional from all fifty states and thirty nations. The Lanier Middle School Percussion Ensemble is one of fewer than 40 ensembles that were accepted from applicants from around the world. Through its appearance at the Midwest Clinic, the Lanier Middle School Percussion Ensemble, its director Hunter McRae, and these musicians earned nationwide and even worldwide recognition. The majority of the audience members at this concert were music educators. Guest conductors on the program included Douglas Moore, Principal of Newnan High School, Brian Lambeth, Director of Bands at North Gwinnett High School, and Mary Wilson, Director of Bands at Lanier Middle School. Thomas McCutchen, Professor of Percussion at the University of Georgia, was the featured marimba soloist on “Leyenda” by Isaac Albeniz/Gifford Howarth. Other works on the program included Millennium, Oye Como Va, Immortal Dream Fantasy on “Old Skibereen,” Voices of Spring Waltz, Spring Wind, The Final Pursuit, Arabesque no. 1, Dystopia, and Mujer Latina. Congratulations to Hunter McRae and the Lanier Middle School Percussion Ensemble on a world-class performance! Band Students Make the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony

Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony 2008-2009 PersonnelThank you to everyone who auditioned for the Atlanta Youth Wind Symphony this year. We scheduled nearly 300 auditions, and were pleased to hear many well-prepared, spirited, musically interesting performances. Because of a highly talented applicant pool and stiff competition, we regret that we are not able to offer admission to all qualified applicants. No former members are guaranteed re-admission, and in many sections, All-State caliber players were not able to be offered a position. It is our hope that the audition experience was enjoyable and educational, and whether the "news" is good or bad, that you will use this as a springboard to continue excellent music-making in your home schools and other programs around Atlanta.
