Shutter Sense exists for the development of student photographers attending public and private schools in Gwinnett County. It is the only exhibit that showcases the creative experiences taking place in our schools via the medium of photography. This show helps to promote the growth of the arts in our public schools. The teachers from sponsoring schools are committed to providing continuous, high level, creative experiences for the young people in our classes. This show will include digital work, traditional black and white prints, and alternatively-processed pieces and is judged by professional photographers. We are pleased that middle schools will also participate! It will be hosted by the National Art Honors Society students at Parkview High School, Meadowcreek High School, North Gwinnett High School, Collins Hill High School, Central Gwinnett High School, and the Digital Media Design and Production students at Phoenix High School.
The Hudgens Center for the Arts has graciously agreed to donate gallery space for the exhibit. We are in the process of collecting donations from various businesses to support the exhibit. November 2010

Students at Dacula Middle School under the direction of visual arts teacher, Tracy Powers, created a school wide art project - a tile mural. Every student who had Visual Art classes in grades 6-8 created a tile. The mural was unveiled at the Dacula Middle School's Fine Art Night on May 3, 2011. This mural gave the students an opportunity to feel a sense of community within the school and to leave a part of them at the school once they moved on to high school.
The project was a huge success. The students were inspired by textures and images found in and around the ocean. They used items that can be found in the ocean or can be used in the ocean to create their tiles such as sea shells, drift wood, coral, fishing net, and clay tools. The students learned about gradation and color theory which tied the mural together. Each tile is a work of art in itself, but the tiles create a masterpiece collectively.

Gina Perkins and Linda Van Houten, art teachers at McKendree Elementary for 23 and 21 years respectively, have been working on a two year project with Atlanta Oncology. Atlanta Oncology approached the art teachers regarding the construction of ceiling tiles for the treatment rooms at the center located on Highway 120 in front of Gwinnett Medical Center. The art teachers selected McKendree ES visual arts students from grades 4 and 5 to become part of an Art Staff which met before school to draw and paint the tiles.
Last school year the art students created an underwater theme for Treatment Room #1. This year's McKendree ES art students chose a jungle theme for the ceiling tiles for Treatment Room #2. The students drew the panels, and then painted them with acrylics. Several art students and their parents accompanied Ms. Perkins and Ms. Van Houten to the Gwinnett Medical Center on May 16, 2011 to present the tiles. The medical staff gave the student a tour of the monitoring room, showed them a radiation machine, and escorted them to the room where this set of tiles will be installed for patients to enjoy while having their treatments. The 15 Art Staff students were very happy to have contributed to the community with their artwork in such a meaningful way. May 2011
