Learning to read and write is the basis for all the learning that follows. The Language Arts Office envisions elementary school as a time during which students master those beginning reading and writing skills that build the broad base of knowledge necessary for success at the middle and secondary levels. Specifically, the elementary language arts program provides students with a balanced approach to learning that is necessary to be successful readers, writers, and communicators of language. In the primary grades, the instructional focus is on letters, sounds, and words and reading and writing with accuracy and expression. As students move into the upper elementary grades, "learning to read" progresses to "reading to learn" content material, where there is a deepening awareness of the demands of text, and the need for students to read and write to communicate conceptual understandings.

In K-5, all students are expected to:
  • understand that print carries meaning
  • understand sound/letter relationships
  • apply strategies independently as they read and write
  • apply appropriate grammar and spelling skills in writing
  • acquire skills to become lifelong readers and writers
  • use reading to learn information and to express meaningful response

To provide additional instructional support for our teachers, we have developed grammar mini-lessons for grades one through five. Teachers, please click below to access these lessons.
