SKILL: Point of View; Persuasive Text

ANCHOR TEXT: Hey, Little Ant by Phillip and Hannah Hoose

Abstract
This book is conversation between a boy and an ant as they debate reasons to squish or not to squish the ant. The issue is clearly seen through each character’s eyes and finishes leaving the decision up to the reader. This persuasive book shows the points of view through the text and pictures.

LESSON
To introduce this story, ask students to think about what they may say to a human if they were a fly.
Ask for volunteers to share their thoughts. Tell students that this book will show a conversation between a boy and ant, and to record their observations on the organizer that follows to notice the arguments and counter arguments. After completing the reading, have students write a story following the same pattern, with a child debating a fly.
