Introduction to DNA
DNA, also known as deoxyribonucleic
acid determines the look, growth, and reproduction cells of all living
things. In 1865 Gregor Mendel showed that heredity is passed on in discrete
units. Walter Flemminy took it one step further when he came up with the
theory of inheritance. In the 1900's 2 European scientists confirmed
Gregor Mendel's theory of heredity. Wilhelm then later came up with the
word gene and could tell the difference between genotype (the inherited
genetic code of a living thing for a specific trait) and phenotype (a livings
things inherited physical appearance). In 1943 William Astbury obtained
the first x-ray image of DNA. In 1953 James Watson and Francis Crick discovered
the structure of DNA. DNA is in each of us and these people helped us understand
it. |
