Location and Geography
Yemen is on the continent of Asia. Yemen lies on the southwestern
tip of the Arabian peninsula. Its neighboring countries are Saudi Arabia
to the north and Oman to the northeast. The southern shores meet the waters
of Aden, a point of access to the Arabian Sea.
Yemen is 214,230 square miles. Sana’a is the capital. It has thousands
of small villages. The name Sana’a means fortified place. Did you know
that they have no major rivers but they have riverbeds that get filled
with occasional rains? There are 4 regions. The coast of Thoma, which means
hot earth, mountains (Yemen's highest peak is Jabbi noon shu’ ayb is 12,012
feet), Eastern Plateau and Desert which is the rub al-kholi which means
empty quarter and islands. Yemen has 112 islands. The flora of Yemen includes
coffee shrubs and there are over 300 major species of birds.

Religion
Yemen's religion is mostly Islam. The other religions include Christianity
and Judaism. The Islam religion believes in the five pillars: shoitodoh
is confession and the essence of a Muslim's faith, Salat is prayer, Zakot
is alms giving, sawm is fasting, and Hajs is pilgrimage to Mecca.

Lifestyle
Most of Yemen's people are Arabs. The major occupation is fishing.
The literacy rate is 38%. The life expectancy for men is 49 years. Women
live an average of 51 years. At the age of 6, children in Yemen go to school
that is free.

Economy
The population of Yemen is 16,600,000. The country's main industries
are oil refining and cigarettes. The main imports are cement, machinery
and chemicals.
The main exports are crude oil, hides, coffee, vegetables, dried
fish and cotton. The currency of Yemen is Riyol (YR) yr 136.66=US $ 1.

Government
In Yemen the current leader is Ali Abdalloh Salih. He has been the
leader since May 22,1990. The government of Yemen is a Republic. They have
three parties. The leaders get elected by the people and get a 7-year term.
They have a supreme court like the U.S.A. They can vote in Yemen at the
age of 18 years old.
They are building a house for their leader.
