Osborne Intramurals

Mission:
To create an environment that focuses on FUN and INVOLVEMENT while allowing students the opportunity to compete "within the walls" of Osborne Middle School.

Planned Activities:
The Intramural program at Osborne Middle School is one that will focus on fun and involvement for as many students as possible. Throughout the intramural seasons students may participate in a variety of activities including: Basketball, Soccer, Capture the Flag, Team Handball, Ping Pong, Fitness activities and much more.

The Ripple Effect

Mission:
Fellowship, Bible Study, and Service

Description of Activities:
The Ripple Effect is a student-led Christian Fellowship.  All students are welcome.  We participate in a variety of activities during our meetings.  The students meet for a short time of fellowship and refreshments, then student leaders introduce a lesson each week based on a theme of their choosing.  They conduct a student group game, and then implement a Bible study focused on their chosen theme.  In addition, Ripple Effect sponsors "See You at the Pole", has guest speakers, and sponsors several service activities to help the less fortunate.

Meetings:
We meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month from 8:15-9:00 a.m.  Our first meeting will be in September.

Student Council

Mission:
The purpose of the Student Council is to foster a positive environment in which a variety of students provide service oriented activities for our school and community.

Description of Activities:
Our members will be involved in several community projects and local philanthropies. Money from the BoxTops for Education competition will be used for these projects.
Student Council representative are made up of individuals who have been chosen from each homeroom.  From this group, officers are elected by the entire student body.  Only 8th graders may run for the office of President. However, Vice-President, Treasurer, and Secretary are open to all grades.

Student Requirements:
Representatives must have a signed permission slip and transportation must be provided.
Representatives must maintain a C average and attend all meetings.

Meetings:
We meet at 8:15 a.m. on the third Thursday of the month in the Media Center (unless otherwise noted).

Jazz Band

Mission:
To provide a learning environment for students to become more musically proficient regarding jazz styles, articulation, and improvisation.

Description of Activities:
Jazz Band is a small ensemble consisting of saxophones, trumpets, trombones, percussionists, piano, rhythm guitar, and bass players.  Members are selected by audition, and rehearse before school.  We hold rehearsals and performances throughout the school year.

National Junior Art Honor Society

Mission:
National Junior Art Honor Society is a program specifically for middle level seventh and eighth grade students. The purpose is to recognize those students who have shown an outstanding ability in art.

Student Requirements:
Students interested must see Mr. Gillespie and be able to present artwork that demonstrates a high standard of quality.  In order to register for Osborne’s chapter of NJAHS, students must pay dues of $15.  This goes toward national membership dues as well as honor cords and a custom created T-shirt.

Meetings:
Students are expected to attend at least 80% of the meetings held over the course of the year. Meetings are on Mondays at 8:15am in the Art Room unless projects require more frequent meetings.  It is your responsibility to check the announcements, the Visual Art bulletin board, or with the sponsor to determine when the meetings are being held.  Students who do not attend at least 80% of meetings will not receive an honor cord on Honor's Night and will not be listed on the official NJAJS student roster.

Dates:
January 28: Sketch due of 2D artwork to be created and framed for Art Show

February 11: Discuss and create art for Youth Art Month to be passed out to staff and students.

February 25: Finish up personal artwork.

March 4: Frame artwork and put labels on, clean glass, and put back up in the halls.

March 5: After school meeting 4:30 - 6:00pm.  Induction ceremony and tie dye shirt creation.

March 18: Turn in shirts for logo printing.  Sketch out scenes for paintings.

April 1: Work on paintings.

April 15: Work on paintings.

April 29: Create art for sale at Art Show.

May 2: Create art for sale at Art Show.

May 13: Prepare for Art Show.

May 14: Art Show 4:30 - 5:30pm

OMS Honor Orchestra

Mission:
To give advanced orchestra members additional performance opportunities and to make orchestra a more visible part of the school and the community.  Students will be selected to participate on an audition-only basis.  $20 dues will be assessed to cover the cost of T-shirts, music, and supplies.

Planned Activities:
The Honor Orchestra at Osborne Middle School will focus on challenging repertoire and performance techniques. Students will perform for Holiday Music in the Halls, play at various PTA functions, tour elementary schools, and much more.

Thursday mornings, 8:00-9:00am, Orchestra Room 1.808

Pops Orchestra

Mission:
To provide orchestra students in 7th and 8th grades with an opportunity to rehearse and perform "popular" selections of music.  Students who participate will enjoy the time spent playing fun pieces in a casual setting. 

Description of Activities:
Pops Orchestra is available to all 7th and 8th grade students who wish to participate, and involves rehearsing music that is easily recognizable, or popular music.  This group meets periodically throughout the year, and involves a field trip at the end of the year to perform for the elementary schools in the Mill Creek Cluster.

Tuesday mornings (approx. twice per month), 8:15-9:00am, Orchestra Room 1.808

Beta Club

Mission:
The purpose of this organization shall be the promotion of scholarship, leadership, and good citizenship at Osborne Middle School.

Description of Activities:
Planned activities include service projects which are of service to Osborne Middle School and its surrounding community.

The membership of this organization shall consist of students in the 8th grade who, because of their worthy character, creditable achievement, and commendable attitude, have been approved for membership by the executive head of Osborne Middle School.  A 90% GPA must be earned in all subjects, with good conduct, to qualify for membership. Membership will be based on the average grades from all four quarters of the 7th grade year.  Induction for 8th graders who qualify will be in the fall of their 8th grade year.

Dues are $25.00.

Meetings:
We meet at 8:15 a.m. on the first Thursday of the month.  Meetings will be held in the cafeteria.

8th Grade Cheerleading

Mission:
To allow selected 8th graders the opportunity to develop team work and cheerleading skills while promoting school spirit.  It is expected that OMS cheerleaders will be excellent role models for their peers.

Description of Activities:
Cheerleaders are selected through a one-week tryout process.  We practice before school and attend all OMS basketball games.

8th Grade Boys' Basketball

Mission:
To prepare selected 8th grade boys to participate in an environment that shows teamwork and effort, as well as practice all guideline for being a student athlete.

Description of Activities:
Only 8th grade boys may try out for Boys' Basketball.  We will have one or two underclassmen as managers.  Practices are held before school.

8th Grade Girls' Basketball

Mission:
To represent OMS with an 8th grade girls' basketball team that exemplifies teamwork, academic excellence, character, proper fundamental basketball skills, good conduct, and good sportsmanship.

Description of Activities:
Tryouts will be in October, followed by scheduled practices and games.

OMS Book Club

Mission: To read and review award-winning books and prepare a team of ten members to compete in the Gwinnett County Readers Rally.

Description of Activities:
The OMS Book Club will meet at least once a month before school in the Media Center to read and discuss the Georgia Book Award nominees and other award-winning titles. Each club member will participate in a local reading quiz bowl. Ten club members will be selected to compete at the county competition on March 3, 2012.

Meetings:
The meetings will be held in the Media Center from 8:15-9:00 AM on dates to be announced.

Select Ensemble

Mission:
To provide Chorus students with an additional opportunity to rehearse and perform "popular" selections of music.

Description of Activities:
Select Ensemble is available to Chorus students who successfully audition and involves rehearsing music that is easily recognizable. This group meets throughout the year in the Chorus room on Friday mornings. Select Ensemble performs at the Chorus concerts as well as local community functions.

Drama Club

Mission:
To provide students with additional opportunities outside of the classroom to experience and learn from all aspects of theatre including peer collaboration, reading comprehension, public speaking, actor training, and production work. 
 

Description of Activities:
The primary focus of the Drama Club will be to work towards a performance for the school and community at the end of Spring semester.  Students in the club will audition for and be cast in a show.  Students will learn lines and rehearse  throughout the year to prepare for a performance.  Meeting times will vary and will include both before and after school rehearsals.

Student Eligibility:
The Drama Club will be open to all interested 7th and 8th graders.  After the initial meeting, auditions will be held to cast the show.

Guitar Club

Mission:
To provide students with an opportunity to learn basic guitar chords and the foundations of proper performance technique.  More advanced players will perform for the group and share their favorite repertoire.  Guitars will be available for check-out on a first-come, first-served basis.  $20 dues will be assessed to cover the cost of music and supplies.

Description of Activities:
Guitar Club is available any OMS student who wishes to participate, and no previous instrumental experience is required.  Students will learn “the basics” and will take home a reference sheet for individual practice each month.  We will also listen to music, watch performances by famous guitarists, and discuss the history/evolution of the guitar. This group meets monthly, and students may bring their own guitars.

All meetings are from 8:15am-9:00am in the Orchestra Room (1.808).  Dates to be determined.

Odyssey of the Mind

Mission:
Odyssey of the Mind is a team opportunity for students to compete in an international educational program that provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students.

Description of Activities:
Team members apply their creativity to solve problems that range from building mechanical devices to presenting their own interpretation of literary classics. They will bring their solutions to competition on the local, state, and world level. Thousands of teams from throughout the U.S. and from about 25 other countries participate in the program.  All interested students from 6th-8th grades meeting the eligibility requirements are encouraged to tryout. 

Student Requirements:
Team members must have a signed permission slip and transportation must be provided.  Team members must maintain passing grades, attend meetings, and be involved in team fundraisers.

Meetings:
The team will meet 2-3 times a week either at school or at the parent sponsor’s house.  When competition gets closer, “Super Saturdays” (longer workdays) will begin to take place.

FIRST LEGO League Robotics Club

Mission:
Create excitement for science and technology via preparation for and participation in team competition with the FIRST LEGO League, which challenges students to solve real world problems facing scientists and engineers through the use of robot design and research.

Description of Planned Activities:
Student teams have approximately eight weeks to prepare for FIRST LEGO League's annual Challenge.  This Challenge consists of two parts:  a robot game and project.  In the robot game, teams design, build, program, and test autonomous robots that must perform a series of tasks, or missions.  In the project, teams conduct research and create a technological or engineering solution to an aspect of the Challenge and present that solution.  Building problem solving skills, creative thinking, teamwork, competitive play, sportsmanship, and a sense of community are our primary goals.

Meetings:
Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00am to 8:55am in Mr. Clark's room.  Additional meeting times will be announced as needed.

Expect additional meetings as competition dates draw near.
