Office of Advisement & Counseling

The Office of Advisement and Counseling leads, supports, and facilitates the (K-12) School Counseling and (6-12) Student Advisement Programs.

The School Counseling Department is an indispensable part of each school team. Every school in Gwinnett County has at least one counselor. All GCPS counselors are state certified, highly skilled professionals who possess the minimum of a Masters degree or higher in school counseling. Our purpose is to serve 100% of Gwinnett students in removing barriers to academic success. Our goal is to assist students in developing skills and competencies necessary to complement the academic curriculum and impact positive school climate. Counselors work in cooperation with parents and teachers to provide programs and services that enhance student academic performance, instill respect for lifelong learning and heighten career awareness and exploration. Counselors provide crisis intervention and serve as a community liaison.

The purpose of the Student Advisement Programs in each middle and high school is to provide an additional opportunity for all students to make meaningful connections with trained school personnel and to receive essential educational planning support. The goal of Student Advisement Programs is to improve student achievement and school climate through increased academic guidance and support. Advisors meet with students regularly to review progress reports, test results, current and future course enrollments, as well as to address personal and social issues.
