American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance

AVALANCHE features 30 student compositions and arrangements.

The Parkview High School Symphonic band under the direction of Jason Atha and Richard Magner recently placed "honorable mention" for the 2015 American Prize in Wind Ensemble Performance. Based on an extensive application and submission of recordings, the Parkview Symphonic Band was the only high school ensemble chosen as a semi-finalist and finalist in the Community/High School division. The American Prize is a series of new, non-profit national competitions in the performing arts providing cash awards, professional adjudication, regional, national, and international recognition for the best recorded performances by ensembles and individuals each year in the United States at the professional, college/university, church, community and secondary school levels.

North Gwinnett Middle School Band Wins GMEA Exemplary Performance Award

The North Gwinnett Middle School Band under the direction of Travis Downs and Robin Schaps has been awarded the Georgia Music Educators Association (GMEA) Exemplary Performance Award for 2015. The Exemplary Performance Award is presented to middle and high school performing ensembles that achieve outstanding results in all areas of performance sponsored by the GMEA. These areas include Large Group Performance Evaluation, Solo and Ensemble Performance Evaluation, All State, and the District Honor events. It is the intent of the Exemplary Performance Award to serve as the most prestigious award recognized by GMEA. North Gwinnett Middle School will be presented the award by a member of the GMEA board during their concert on October 13, 2015 at 7:00 PM at the North Gwinnett High School Auditorium.

Nick Pelletier to play with National Youth Orchestra

Duluth High School student Nick Pelletier, violist, in the Duluth Chamber Orchestra has won an audition to perform with the 2015 NYO-USA (National Youth Orchestra-USA).

Pelletier will join 120 other young musicians age 16-19 in a concert tour of China as well as a Carnegie Hall performance which will be broadcast live worldwide. All expenses will be paid by Carnegie Hall's Weill Music Institute.

A mission of the NYO-USA is fostering cultural discovery through performance and meeting with local young musicians from China. The Orchestra will perform nine concerts on the two week tour, July 10-26, preceded by a two week residency at Purchase College, SUNY.

Members of the New York Philharmonic will coach the students. The tour will take them to seven cities, Beijing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xi'an, Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Hong Kong. The Orchestra is in it's third year and is the first national youth orchestra of this kind since Leopold Stokowski established one in 1940 and then was suspended by the advent of WWII. The first two season's the orchestra toured Russia and the USA.

Mountain View High School Chamber Orchestra performsat the High

The chamber orchestra from Mountain view played to the public in one of the galleries at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta on Tuesday while the visual arts students from painting and drawing exhibited their work.


National ACDA Performers

Pictured: Kasey Bell and Aubrey Peat, who were selected to perform in ACDA National Honor Choirs. Kasey will sing in the National High School Mixed Choir and Aubrey will sing in the National College/Community Latin American Choir.

The two Mountain View Choir members were selected to sing in American Choral Directors Association's National Honor Choirs at the national conference in February. The ACDA National Conference is the largest conference in the nation for choral directors in all levels of education; public, private, k-12 and university levels


Southern Music Hall of Fame

Students from the Brookwood High School Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, under the direction of Cathie Hudnall and Phillip Reesman, performed at the Southern Music Hall of Fame event last Friday (October 10) evening. The students were the only group invited to perform for the launching party of the Southern Music Hall of Fame inductions held in downtown Atlanta. The event played host to many music producers and celebrities across the region and country.
