State and National Honors and Recognitions...
Students
Of the 165 GCPS entries in the 2004-05 State Student Media Festival, 77 earned a Superior rating and will compete in the International Student Media Festival. The winning entries represent live-action video, animation, mixed media, and sequential-still productions.
In the 2003-04 International Student Media Festival, thirty GCPS students earned “Excellence in Media Production” awards.
The Duluth High Chamber Orchestra earned the honor of highest rated public school orchestra in the nation after performing at the National Orchestra Festival Competition.
Six GCPS students (from Brookwood High, Collins Hill High, Dacula High, Meadowcreek High, and South Gwinnett High) were winners in the 2005 National Achievement Scholarship Program, which recognizes outstanding Black American high school students.
Two GCPS students (from Brookwood High and Berkmar High) earned 2004 Achievement Awards in Writing from the National Council of Teachers of English.
The North Gwinnett High and Shiloh High literary magazines were "Recommended for Highest Award" by the National Council of Teachers of English.
Two Duluth High students were selected to attend the Anti-Defamation League Grosfeld Family National Youth Leadership Mission in Washington, D.C.
A South Gwinnett High student participated in the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C.
A Collins Hill High student was selected to represent Georgia at the 43rd Annual Senate Youth Program.
A Duluth Middle team placed second in their division and fourth overall in the 44th Knowledge Master Open.
The Shiloh High Air Force Junior ROTC Unit GA-871 won the Distinguished Unit Award for 2003-04 and 2004-05.
Of the 643 GCPS 7th graders participating in the Duke University Talent Identification Program, 15 earned Grand Recognition by scoring in the top 2% nationally on the SAT or ACT test, while 276 qualified for State Recognition by scoring in the top 25% on the SAT or ACT.
Eighteen GCPS students earned perfect scores on the National Latin Exam.
On the National German Exam, 29 of the 82 students nationwide who placed in the 90th percentile or higher were from GCPS. A Dacula High student had the highest score in the state on the Level II exam, and two students from Collins Hill High tied for the highest score in the state on the Level IV exam. Two North Gwinnett High students were among the top 5% of German students in the U.S. A Collins Hill High student was Georgia's senior study trip nominee, and a Mill Creek High student was the Georgia junior study trip winner. Nineteen GCPS students took first place finishes in the state German Convention. A North Gwinnett High student was the winner of a Congress-Bundestag Scholarship to study in Germany.
The Dacula Elementary 5th Grade Soaring Singers were featured in a national PBS broadcast of "The World's Largest Concert."
A Corley Elementary student was one of nine U.S. students selected as a 2005 READ 180 All-Star Award winner.
Two Brookwood High students were among 210 students designated as Beta Scholars by the National Beta Club.
Fourteen GCPS students were selected as candidates for the Presidential Scholars Program.
A number of GCPS students were recognized for excellence by the Advanced Placement testing program. GCPS students were named National AP Scholars, AP Scholars with Distinction, and AP Scholars with Honor.
The Collins Hill High Screamin’ Eagle Band competed in the semifinals of the Bands of America Grand National Championship in Indianapolis. The Collins Hill band also was one of three recipients nationwide of the Sudler Shield Award for outstanding marching bands.
Six GCPS students were selected as TBS Goldstar Students.
Three Gwinnett students (from Lilburn Middle and Trickum Middle) were selected by Turner Broadcasting Systems (TBS) to present a segment of "Great American Moments."
Arcado Elementary's Community Future Problem Solving Team won first place in state competition and third place in world competition.
A Duluth Middle student won third place in the national World Refugee Day poster contest.
Two R.L. Norton Elementary students were selected as 2005 GALAXY Student Heroes in the 2005 Science Education Awards.
A team of Brookwood High students took first place in the Southeast regional finals in the 2004-05 eCYBERMISSION competition, a Web-based science, math, and technology competition.
A Parkview High student was the 2005 Georgia PAGE STAR Student. A Brookwood High student was first runner-up. Four other GCPS students were finalists for the award.
The Berkmar High Academic Decathlon team won the Georgia Academic Decathlon (GAD) championship for the third year in a row.
The Parkview High Science Olympiad team placed first in state competition. The Meadowcreek High team placed second.
The Dr. M.H. Mason Jr. Elementary Odyssey of the Mind team placed first at state competition.
The Norcross High Student Council was elected to the office of President Council of the Georgia Association of Student Councils for 2005–06.
GCPS had 73 students selected to participate in the 2005 Governor’s Honors Program. More than 10% of the Governor’s Honors participants this summer will be from GCPS.
Ten GCPS students earned first and second place finishes in the state Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) competition and moved on to national competition.
Thirty-four GCPS students placed first or second in state DECA competition and will advance to national competition. North Gwinnett High's DECA chapter was the winner of a National CEO Membership Award, Gold Publicity Award, and earned Certification for a School-Based Enterprise. A North Gwinett High student was elected 2005-06 Georgia DECA president, and another North Gwinnett High student earned Georgia Marketing Credentials. The Berkmar High DECA Chapter earned the "Director Level" Award, the second highest achievement for a DECA chapter.
Twenty-one GCPS students placed first or second in state Technology Student Association competition.
Six GCPS students placed first in the Georgia State PTA Reflection Awards.
The Collins Hill High Literary team won first place in state competition.
Three North Gwinnett High students placed second in state Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America competition.
A Duluth High team placed second in the state Knowledge Master Open and went on to national competition.
A Brookwood High student was Georgia's Bob Jerrolds Reading Achievement Winner.
A Central Gwinnett High student won Georgia's Lindy-Lopez Butner Award for ESOL Achievement.
Parkview High students earned first and second place at the 2005 Atlanta Brain Bee.
A team from Phoenix High was recognized as an Outstanding Delegation in the Model United Nations simulation at Georgia State University. Three students were recognized individually as Outstanding Delegates.
The Norcross High Marching Band earned the Grand Championship trophy at the 31st Annual Peach State Marching Festival in Rome, Ga.
A Phoenix High student won first place in the state in Commercial Photography in the 7th District Congressional Art Show.
Four Maxwell High School of Technology students placed first and second at the state SkillsUSA competition.
Three Norcross High students placed first and second in the state on the National Spanish Exam.
The Parkview High Boys’ Cross Country Team, Boys' Soccer Team, and Girls' Soccer Team were state AAAAA champions.
The Collins Hill High Boys' Wrestling Team, Boys' Swim/Dive Team, Girls' Cross Country Team, and Girls' Basketball Team were state AAAAA champions.
The Duluth High cheerleaders were the state AAAAA Competitive Co-Ed champions.
A Brookwood High team earned first place in the state in the WordMasters Challenge. All grade-level teams placed in the top seven in national competition.
GCPS students (from Collins Hill High, Grayson High, and North Gwinnett High) won a gold award, a silver award, and two bronze awards at the All-State Festival of Art and Design.
Seven GCPS students (from Brookwood High and Norcross High) were Gold and Silvery Key winners in the Scholastic Art Awards.
A total of 170 GCPS students were selected to participate in the Georgia Music Educators Association All-State Chorus 2005. Fifty-one GCPS students were selected to participate in All-State Orchestra. Sixty-nine GCPS students participated in All-State Band.
A Brookwood High student was elected State Beta Club president for 2005-06. A Brookwood High student also placed first in Math competition at the State Beta Club convention.
A Brookwood High student won a regional Scholastic Writing Award from the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.
A Shiloh Middle 7th grader won 1st place in the state in the Fire Safety Essay Contest, sponsored by the Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner's office.
Three Gwinnett students (from Duluth High, Meadowcreek High, and Mill Creek High) were among 51 Georgia high school students selected by state school Superintendent Kathy Cox to serve on the 2004 State Superintendent’s Student Advisory Council.
A Duluth High student is the 2004–05 vice president of the Georgia Association of National Honor Societies.
The Peachtree Ridge High Marching Band won 2nd place at the 19th Annual Southern Marching Classic.
Staff
"A Day in the Life," an original video short written and directed by a Richard Hull Middle Technology Support Technician and executive produced by the school's principal, won a silver award at the World Media Festival in Hamburg, Germany.
A Sycamore Elementary teacher was honored in the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching, the highest honor awarded for teaching in those areas.
The GCPS Teacher of the Year (of Level Creek Elementary) was named 2005 National Elementary Art Educator of the Year by the National Art Education Association and was a finalist for Georgia Teacher of the Year.
A 4th grade teacher at Kanoheda Elementary was one of two Georgia teachers to receive the Milken Family Foundation 2004 National Educator Award with a $25,000 prize.
A Berkmar High teacher was one of 18 teachers across the country to win the Siemens Award for Advanced Placement for excellence in Science and Mathematics.
The GCPS Superintendent was named one of four finalists for National Superintendent of the Year, after being chosen as Georgia Superintendent of the Year. He also was named Citizen of the Year by the Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce.
GCPS' coordinator of the English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and the International Newcomer Center was one of 53 educators in the country invited to participate in Oxford University's Round Table Discussion on Addressing the Educational and Social Consequences of Poverty.
A Duluth High teacher was named Coach of the Year for Coaches VS Cancer by the American Cancer Society.
Forty-three GCPS teachers earned National Board Certification. Gwinnett has close to 150 board-certified teachers.
A Norcross High staff member received a National Band Association's Citation of Excellence.
The GCPS Foreign Language Coordinator was elected President of the National Association of District Supervisors of Foreign Language.
The department of Broadcast and Distance Learning (GCPS TV) earned awards for original productions, including an award at the 26th Annual Telly Awards and an Honorable Mention from the National School Public Relations Association (NSPRA) for the “Results for All” video, and an award at the 2005 Hometown Video Festival for the video production "Change the World."
The staff of Communication and Media Relations earned Golden Achievement Awards from NSPRA for several communication plans. The Live Homework Help promotional campaign was recognized with a Most Innovative Live Homework Help Marketing Program Award by the American Library Association. Communication and Media Relations also earned an NSPRA Award of Merit for the PRIME brochure, a project developed with the department of Professional Learning.
A South Gwinnett High staff member was inducted into the Canadian Football Hall of Fame at the 32nd induction ceremony.
A Shiloh High staff member was the recipient of the 2003-04 Air Force Junior Reserve Officer Training Corps (JROTC) Outstanding Instructor Award.
A Norcross High teacher was selected as a National Orchestra Mentor by the National Music Educators Association.
Two R.L. Norton Elementary teachers were selected as 2005 GALAXY Teacher Heroes in the 2005 Science Education Awards.
A Parkview High teacher was chosen as the 2005 State PAGE STAR Teacher. A Brookwood High teacher was first runner-up. Five other GCPS teachers were finalists.
A Peachtree Ridge High teacher was named Georgia German Teacher of the Year by the American Association of Teachers of German, Georgia chapter.
The Norcross High advisor for the Student Council won state Advisor of the Year from the Georgia Association of Student Councils.
The Sugar Hill Elementary principal was named 2005 Georgia PTA Principal of the Year.
The Peachtree Ridge High principal was named Georgia Thespian Administrator of the Year by the Georgia Thespian State Board and selected as one of the "75 Who Made a Difference" by the University of Oklahoma.
The Norcross High athletic director was selected as the state 5A Athletic Director of the Year.
Coaches from Collins Hill High were named Georgia AAAAA Coaches of the Year in Girls' Cross Country, Girls' Basketball, Boys' Swim/Dive, and Wrestling.
The Parkview High Boys' Soccer coach was named Georgia AAAAA Boys' Soccer Coach of the Year.
GCPS employees from North Gwinnett High, Brookwood Elementary, and Shiloh Middle were named Georgia High School Counselor of the Year, Georgia Writer of the Year, and Georgia Advocate of the Year by the Georgia School Counselors’ Association.
A GCPS literacy coach was named the Georgia Secondary Reading Teacher of the Year.
A Business and Finance staff member was elected president of the Georgia Records Association.
Three GCPS educators were honored by the Visiting International Faculty Program. A Walnut Grove Elementary teacher was named Cultural Educator of the Year for Georgia, a teacher at Knight Elementary was honored for Excellence in International Education, and the principal at Kanoheda Elementary was recognized for Excellence in Cultural Education.
A Berkmar Middle staff member was awarded the Distinguished Clinician in Teacher Education award from the Georgia Association of Teacher Educators.
The principal of Suwanee Elementary and two staff members from the Department of Professional Learning graduated from the National Academy for Staff Developers in 2004.
The principal of Margaret Winn Holt Elementary earned the Distinguished Service Award from the Georgia Art Education Association for exemplary support of the arts.
The principal of Glenn C. Jones Middle earned the Administrative Leadership Award from the Georgia Music Educators Association for support of the arts.
A Berkmar High teacher was one of 10 high school teachers statewide to be accepted to the Professional Association of Georgia (PAGE) Teacher Academy.
Two Transportation staff members were recipients of the Mirror Lite Safety Cross Award.
Three Gwinnett teachers (from Meadowcreek High, Norcross High, and Louise Radloff Middle) were named 2004 Fellows in the Georgia Industrial Fellowships for Teachers (GIFT) program, sponsored by Georgia Institute of Technology.

Parkview High was ranked 7th in a Sports Illustrated article on the top 25 high school sports programs.
Kanoheda Elementary, Knight Elementary, Lawrenceville Elementary, and Lilburn Elementary, in partnership with the GCPS Transportation department, won the National KC3 Citizenship in Motion Award, sponsored by the National Museum of Patriotism and The Kamaron Institute. Simonton Elementary was a finalist.
Lilburn Elementary was one of three programs nationwide to receive the Afterschool Champion Award from the Afternoon Alliance.
R.L. Norton Elementary was named an exemplary school in the 2005 Science Education Awards.
The North Gwinnett High Marketing Lab earned National Certification, Gold Level.
The Marketing programs at Berkmar High, Dacula High, Meadowcreek High, and Shiloh High earned Industry Certification from the Sales and Marketing Executives of Atlanta and the Georgia Department of Education. Business Education programs at Central Gwinnett High and Norcross High earned Industry Certification from the Society for Human Resource Management. Maxwell High School of Technology's Construction program and Drafting program earned Industry Certification from the Construction Education Foundation of Georgia. Technology programs at Brookwood High, Meadowcreek High, and South Gwinnett High earned certification from the International Technology Education Association.
The National Museum of Patriotism and the Kamaron Institute named the following schools and their bus drivers national finalists for the 2005 “KC3™ Citizenship in Motion Award:” Kanoheda Elementary, Knight Elementary, Lawrenceville Elementary, Lilburn Elementary, and Simonton Elementary.
Riverside Elementary was named a Georgia School of Excellence in Student Achievement by the Georgia Department of Education.
Annistown Elementary, G.H. Hopkins Elementary, and Kanoheda Elementary earned Title I recognition from the Georgia Department of Education. Under the federal No Child Left Behind Act, all have made Adequate Yearly Progress for three consecutive years.
The Norcross High Business Education department received Industry Certification, awarded by the Georgia Department of Education.
System
GCPS was recognized in a survey conducted by a partnership of leading music and educational organizations as one of the "Best 100 Communities for Music Education in America."
GCPS was awarded the Georgia Economic Education Program of Excellence Award for its implementation of the Georgia Economic History Project.
GCPS’ Special Education Department was recognized by the Council for Administrators of Special Education as a state leader for increasing the percentage of students with disabilities meeting or exceeding state achievement standards in 2003–04.
