GCPS FY04 Budget Information

Gwinnett County Public Schools’ budget season is underway. GCPS engages in a six-month budget process that involves citizens and educators. The Superintendent's Recommended Budget for Fiscal Year 2004 (FY2004) is approximately $1.3 billion, which represents an investment plan for the community as a whole. This budget-- covering July 1, 2003, to June 30, 2004-- reflects an increase of 1.9 percent over this year’s budget. Student achievement and the teaching and learning process remain at the center of this budget, as evidenced by the fact that 76.2 percent of the General Fund Budget is earmarked for instructional services.

This budget accommodates a growing student population and an aggressive building program that includes eight new schools opening in August 2003. It also includes funding for more than 700 new staff positions to serve additional students. Prior to the budget development process, the state indicated that difficult economic conditions would have a major impact on both the current FY2003 budget and the new budget. For FY2004, the state revenue reductions may be as high as $15 million for our school system. Despite the challenges of state revenue cutbacks, this budget provides the necessary resources for GCPS to continue its focus on becoming a system of world-class schools.
