News You Can Use - 09/13/2004

During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Ann Wright— a graduate of Duluth High currently living and working in Sydney, Australia— will visit Shiloh Elementary on September 14 and 15. Ms. Wright will talk to the 2nd graders at the school about what life is like in Australia, as well as details about the currency, the artwork, and the time difference. “Meet the Author - Judith Ortiz Cofer” Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month by tuning in to GCPS TV to learn about author Judith O. Cofer. Recognized by The New York Times Book Review as “a writer of authentic gifts, with a genuine and important story to tell,” Ms. Cofer is a poet, novelist, and essayist. Through her writing, she explores the process of change and assimilation in Hispanic American culture. Ms. Cofer is Franklin Professor of English and Creative Writing at the University of Georgia. This program airs Sept. 13-18 at 1 p.m.
“Teachers Up Close - Taking a Look at Learning”— Gwinnett teachers continually assess and enhance student learning through targeted instruction. This week's “Teachers Up Close” addresses questions that parents may have about the AKS Continuous Improvement Model and how it is used to improve student achievement. This program airs daily at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 11 p.m.
“English...Yes, I Can! ” (Series 1)“English...Yes, I Can!” (Series 1) is a video telecourse designed to teach beginning English literacy skills to adult learners. Series 1 began reairing August 23 and runs through October 19 on GCPS TV. Watch Monday through Thursday at 9 p.m. with a repeat at 1 a.m. The week’s four episodes may be viewed on Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
