During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Cedar Hill Elementary will host a Relay for Life Spring Cleaning Yard Sale on March 19, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. All proceeds will benefit Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society. For more information, call 770-962-5015.

The Berkmar High Academic Decathlon team won the state title for the third consecutive year. The team, coached by IV Bray, was recognized at the state legislature with a proclamation. The students will travel to Chicago for national competition on April 13. Team members are Brandon Ball, Stewart Barnes, Michael Brown, Matthew Caldwell, Katie Harazin, Chris Knight, Jami Mathewson, Matthew Treager and Greg Rothmeier. Jane Stovall and Theresa Rodrique placed in the top half of the 25 teams present at the National Special Needs Team Safety Road-e-o in Phoenix, Arizona on March 12. For more information, call 770-513-6855.

The Peachtree Ridge High Symphonic Band earned overall superior ratings in performance and sight-reading in their state evaluation in Athens. Three judges scored the band with all A’s in every category. For more information, call 678-957-3100.

Berkmar High students recently took part in the 2005 Metro Language Forum held at Douglas County High. Henrrika Missick received superior ratings in Spanish II, Heidy Flores received an excellent rating in German I, Jeremiah Glover and Katya Hernandez received superior rating in German I, and Windy Soenarto received a good rating in Spanish II. Berkmar High’s Science Olympiad team competed in 22 events at Georgia Perimeter College in Clarkston. Team members received medals and/or ribbons in 11 events. Tricia Harris, Knight Elementary art teacher, will host an art show for grades 3-5 on March 21, the night of the first 3rd grade PTA meeting. Student art work will be displayed in the main, entrance and hallways. For more information, call 770-921-2400.

The Parkview High Visual Arts Department will hold an art exhibit on March 22-24 in the Press Box conference room. Norcross Elementary will sponsor an “Empty Bowls Dinner” on March 29 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Adult tickets may be purchased the night of the dinner for $5. Student tickets are $2. Norcross Elementary and Annistown Elementary will host a Witzzle Pro Math Tournament on March 30 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Annistown. A group of Mountain Park Elementary 3rd grade students will host a book reception on March 31 at 2:30 p.m. in the media center. Students are reading “well used” library books, taking Accelerated Reader quizzes, and writing book summaries. The students will make new book covers in art class and are creating invitations for their parents and friends to attend the reception where the “new” books will be displayed. Simonton Elementary is offering English classes for adults. The two sessions are held on Thursdays from 4 to 5 p.m. and Mondays from 9 to 10 a.m. Both sessions are held in the media center and will run through the remainder of the school year. To celebrate Brookwood High’s 25th anniversary, a hall of fame will be created to recognize former faculty and outstanding graduates of the school. The deadline for nominations is April 1. Nominees will be sent a packet of information to submit to the selection committee by May 16. Nominees must be former Brookwood High students who graduated more than five years ago, or a former faculty member who served at the school more than five years ago. The Interact Club at South Gwinnett High recently participated in two service projects. Students filled more than 200 eggs with candy for an after school program at Westminster Presbyterian Church. “ArtStage-Elementary Honor Chorus” Celebrate “Music in Our Schools” month by watching a special presentation of GCPS TV’s “ArtStage.” Tune in to hear the beautiful and talented voices of the Gwinnett County Elementary Honor Chorus and the Brookwood Bel Canto Chorus. This 60-min. program airs March 21-27 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

“Achieving Excellence-Inside Georgia Schools with Kathy Cox” GCPS TV is reairing this news and information show from the State Department of Education which focuses on issues in education throughout Georgia. Included in this segment are a visit with Susan Ralstin, Kanoheda Elementary teacher and 2004 Milken Family Foundations National Educator Award winner; and a video submission from Brookwood High students, “Part Time Work.” The program will air on GCPS TV March 21-27 at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., and 11 p.m.

“Sharing Perspectives at the National Museum of the American Indian-E3 EFT” During this Electronic Field Trip, students will visit the National Museum of the American Indian where stories are brought to life through dance, music, basket weaving, and other objects of everyday and ceremonial use. The Museum's Cultural Interpreters, representing a variety of Native American tribes, will each share stories from their own communities using objects, dance, and music traditions. This 90-min. program airs live March 22 at 10 a.m.

March is Music in Our Schools Month, National Middle Level Education Month, National Nutrition Month, Women’s History Month, Social Work Month, and Youth Art Month.

March 25 is a student and teacher holiday.

The Georgia High School Graduation Test will be administered to juniors during March 29-31.

April 4-8 is spring break for schools.

April 8 is a system wide spring holiday for GCPS.

The next regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., April 14, 2005, at Lawrenceville East, located at 723 Hi-Hope Road in Lawrenceville.
