During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Twenty GCPS staff members participated in the 2004-05 Leadership Academy VI. The theme for 2004-05 was “Highlighting Excellence.” For more information, call Dr. Glenn Pethel at 678-225-5504.

The Brookwood High eCYBERMISSION team placed first in regional competition, allowing team members to compete in national competition in Washington D.C. this past summer. Grayson Elementary will hold an open house for parents of students in kindergarten through 2nd grade on Aug. 22 at 7 p.m. The open house for students in grades 3-5 will be held on Aug. 23 at 7 p.m. For more information, call 770-963-7189.

Michele Gill, a special education resource teacher at Brookwood High, was one seven educators selected nationwide to receive an Education Fellowship from the Ford Motor Fund to participate in an Earthwatch expedition this past July. “GCPS Focus.” This week GCPS TV will air segments on the new student attendance guidelines, AYP success stories at three Gwinnett schools, and summer learning for both students and staff. This 30-min. program airs daily at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., and 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 11 p.m.

“Salsa.” Salsa uses puppets, animation, live action, and music to create a unique experience for first-time learners of Spanish language and culture. This 30-min. program airs August 22-25 at 8 a.m. and 6 p.m.

“Essential Science for Teachers - Earth and Space Science” Annenberg/CPB. A video, print, and Web-based professional development workshop designed to help K-6 teachers gain an understanding of some of the bedrock science concepts they need to teach today's standards-based curriculum. This 60-min. program airs August 22-25 at 11 a.m.

“English...Yes, I Can! (Series 2)” English...Yes, I Can (Series 2) is a video telecourse designed to teach English literacy skills to adult learners. Series 2 is scheduled to air August 1 through September 1 on GCPS TV. The 60-minute program airs Monday-Thursday at 9 p.m., and again at 1 a.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.
