34 GCPS educators earn national certification

The National Board of Professional Teaching Standards (NBPTS) has announced the names of 6,500 teachers from across the nation who have earned the teaching profession's highest credential-- National Board Certification. Of those, 311 educators are based in Georgia schools and 34 teach in Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS).

According to NBPTS, National Board Certification is a symbol of teaching excellence. It is a voluntary process that is achieved through a rigorous performance-based assessment that takes nearly a year to complete. Through the assessment process, teachers document their subject-matter knowledge, provide evidence that they teach their subjects to students most effectively, and demonstrate their ability to manage and measure student learning. According to an NBPTS database, GCPS now has a total of 39 nationally certified teachers.

In a NBPTS survey, the majority of candidates pursuing National Board Certification said that they believed the certification process had made them a better teacher.
