Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, District III representative on the Gwinnett County Board of Education, has been elected to serve a three-year term as the District 5 Director for the Georgia School Boards Association (GSBA). As District 5 Director, Dr. Murphy will represent Gwinnett and Fulton counties on the GSBA Board of Directors. The district includes Gwinnett County Public Schools, Buford City Schools, Atlanta Public Schools, and Fulton County Schools.

"We are extremely pleased to have Dr. Murphy join our Board of Directors,” says GSBA Executive Director Sis Henry. “This is an important role and one that demands a high level of leadership.”

“Dr. Murphy is an exemplary Board member with demonstrated leadership capabilities,” says Daniel D. Seckinger, 2005 chairman of the Gwinnett County Board of Education. “She no doubt will serve GSBA and its members in District 5 as effectively as she serves the citizens and students of Gwinnett County Public Schools.”

Dr. Murphy took office with the Gwinnett County BOE in January of 1997, where she represents all or part of the Norcross, Duluth, and Peachtree Ridge clusters, as well as Monarch School and Buchanan High School of Technology. She is the Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Morehouse School of Medicine.

The Georgia School Boards Association is an advocate of public education and supports citizen control of public school systems. GSBA is a voluntary, statewide organization that provides numerous professional services and training opportunities to the state’s local boards of education, and represents the collective resolve of local boards in the governance of public education. GSBA has been serving local boards for more than 50 years.
