Plan to attend a 2012 Area Board Meeting   
Five Area Board Meetings will be held in April 2010The Gwinnett County Board of Education and CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks will meet with students, parents, educators, and community members in March and April for Area Board Meetings. The meetings will begin at 7 p.m. in the host school's theater. Citizens may attend any of the meetings. Find a schedule of Area Board Meetings and regular Monthly Board Meetings online.
GCPS 8th graders top state writing scores
Gwinnett's 8th graders posted high achievement on the Georgia Grade 8 Writing Assessment, with the #1 school in the state and eight of the top 20 schools. With a system passing rate of 93%, 17% of test-takers exceeded state standards, well above the state average of 7%.
GEMS committee aligns AKS
to state-adopted standards  
In early March, the GEMS Oversight Committee-- made up of educators, parents, and community members-- convened to review and align the school system's Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) to the state-adopted Common Core Georgia Performance Standards (CCGPS) in the areas of mathematics (K-9), language arts (K-12), and literacy standards in science, social studies, and technical education for middle and high school students. The updated AKS have been adopted by the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The adopted AKS will guide instruction beginning in the 2012-13 school year.
Board of Education appoints new leader    
In March, the Board appointed Dr. Bryan Long the the principal position at Dacula High as veteran Principal Donnie Nutt retires at the end of the month.

It's time to prepare your child for "big school." Families of rising kindergartners can learn more on the system's website about what to bring for Kindergarten Registration on May 3 and what to expect next year.

Have you visited the GCPS Parent Portal? In addition to keeping up with your student's academic career, you now can access summary information about your student's textbooks and library books, check the balance in your student's MyPayments account, and send e-mail directly to your student's teachers. Learn more about these new features online.
Summer School 2012 options for students   
  • Registration information is now available for the 2012 Summer School session for high school students, which begins June 11 for online classes and June 12 for face-to-face classes.
  • Grayson Technical Education Program and Maxwell High School of Technology are hosting four-day camps (June 11-14) for rising 7th, 8th, and 9th graders, featuring hands-on projects related to technical career fields.
  • Dates to remember...     Don't forget!
  • Some important dates on the GCPS calendar: March 30 is a student holiday, and Spring Break is the week of April 2. All GCPS offices will be closed on April 6.
  • Reminder about testing dates in April: The High School Gateway assessments for science and social studies are set for April 16 and 18. The Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) for students in grades 3-8 are scheduled for April 23-27, and the testing window for End of Course Tests (EOCTs) is May 7-16.
