   "We know that SAT scores are a benchmark used by many to assess how well schools are doing and this increase is something we should

celebrate. However, we also know there is still work to be done in terms of helping all students achieve at higher levels and we are committed to making that happen."

Simpson Elementary named
National Blue Ribbon School 

U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan recently recognized Simpson Elementary as a 2012 National Blue Ribbon School. The Norcross Cluster elementary school is one of only 269 schools from across the nation receiving this honor, recognized in the "Exemplary High Performing" category.

GCPS celebrates its local
2012 Teacher of the Year logo Teachers of the Year    

This year's 131 local school honorees will move into the next phase of the Teacher of the Year (TOTY) process as they are considered for the systemwide honor. This group will be narrowed down to 26 semifinalists, to be announced on Oct. 5. From that group, six finalists will be chosen in mid-October. All local school TOTYs will be recognized at the annual Teacher of the Year banquet on Nov. 1 

Be an informed voterExercise your right to vote
On Nov. 6, Georgians will vote on a proposed change to Georgia's Constitution that has significant implications for the state's public schools. Click here to review the ballot language voters will see at the polls. Reminder: All GCPS schools will be closed on Nov. 6, as many school facilities will serve as voting locations. Early voting starts Oct. 15, with advance voting at sites around the county on Sat., Oct. 27, and Oct. 29-Nov. 2.
Get ready... with Ready GeorgiaReady Georgia is ready to assist families     
September was Emergency Preparedness Month, but being prepared for emergencies is important year-round. The Ready Georgia website contains videos about preparing for the unexpected, tipsheets on creating customized Ready kits, and activities and information for kids. The website also features a free mobile app for smartphones.
Prepare for a successful   BT-mother and daughter    
parent-teacher conference 

Mon., Oct. 1 and Tues., Oct. 2 are early release days for K-8 students. During this week many schools will hold their parent-teacher conferences. Check out a ParenTVision video and a helpful checklist of ways to prepare for the conference. Parents also are encouraged to participate in Parent Perception Surveys at their student's school during parent-teacher conferences. Additionally, the survey will be available through the Parent Portal starting Nov. 1.

Upcoming dates...     Every day is a fresh start for teaching and learning in GCPS  
  •  The GCPS Community-Based Mentoring Program is still accepting golfers and sponsors for its Third Annual Golf Tournament on Mon., Oct. 8.
  • On Mon., Oct. 8, all GCPS schools will close for a student holiday.
  • The College Fair for Students with Disabilities is set for Sat., Oct. 13, from 11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m., at GCPS' Instructional Support Center (ISC).
  • The Gwinnett County Board of Education will meet Thurs., Oct. 18 at 7 p.m. at the ISC.
  • Students and families are invited to attend the Asian American College Fair on Sat., Oct. 20, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., at The Korean Church of Atlanta in Duluth.
