State launches Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS): 27 Gwinnett schools recognized for Academic Performance

The Governor’s Office of Student Achievement in collaboration with the Governor’s Office and the Georgia Department of Education recognized 317 schools statewide for improving and promoting excellence in student academic achievement. Of the schools recognized, 27 are Gwinnett County schools. The state recognizes schools in two categories: 1) Greatest gain in percentage of students meeting and exceeding academic standards; and 2) Highest percentage of students meeting and exceeding academic standards. In each category, there are four school award levels: Platinum, Gold, Silver, and Bronze.

“We salute the students and staff of the schools recognized by the state, taking pride in their gains and exceptional performance,” says CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks. “At the same time, we also need to acknowledge the overall gains made by schools throughout Gwinnett. Sixty Gwinnett schools actually improved their reading and/or math scores last year, and the percentage of schools making AYP increased from 85.9% in 2003-04 to 89.1% last school year. All of these are indicators that Gwinnett students are achieving at high levels and that our focus on teaching and learning is making a difference.”

Under the Single Statewide Accountability System (SSAS) award-winning schools will receive banners and certificates from the state based on the school’s profile. For more information regarding the SSAS refer to the Governor’s Office of Student Achievement’s Web site at www.gaosa.org.
