Common symptoms experienced after a concussion

Not sure what to look for to determine if your student-athlete may have suffered a concussion? These are the most common symptoms that follow a concussion-causing injury:

Headache Dizziness
Vomiting Irritability
Nausea Feeling emotional
Balance problems Mentally foggy

“One of the key components to proper recovery is both cognitive and physical rest,” says Dr. Cullen. “This frequently requires missing school for a few days while the patient is very symptomatic and instituting academic accommodations until symptoms improve after return to school. We would recommend that all athletes follow up with a physician familiar with the ImPACT program, since it is now recognized as an important part of proper concussion management. Determining when a concussion has resolved without ImPACT is otherwise just a good guess.”
