HS Gateway Results Released; 92.6 Percent of Test-Takers Pass
Final results of the 2000 administration of the high school Gateway test have been released. As school system officials expected, when comparing results using the same cut score, student performance in 2000 exceeded that of students taking the 1999 pilot test. Of the 12,614 students tested in April 2000, 92.6 percent-- 11,685 students-- passed all four sections of the test. The high school Gateway test asks students to write two essays-- one on a science topic and one on a social studies topic. In addition to receiving grades on science and social studies content, students are graded on their writing/language arts skills. Passing rates for each scored area are:
  • Science-- 96.2% passed (3.8% failure rate)
  • Language Arts in Science-- 96.4% passed (3.6% failure rate)
  • Social Studies-- 97.3% passed (2.7% failure rate)
  • Language Arts in Social Studies (93.8% (6.2% failure rate)
High school students must pass the Gateway test in order to earn a Gwinnett County diploma. Tenth graders who fail the test will be given seven opportunities to retake and pass the Gateway before the scheduled graduation date for their class. The first retake opportunity will be in November at each high school. Schools will offer extra help for students preparing for a Gateway retake. These intervention courses will be offered after school and online. There is no fee for the class; however, online students pay an $80 technology fee. Students who take these courses will receive 24 additional hours of instruction. Students do not earn credit toward graduation for taking these intervention courses.
