Gwinnett County Public Schools announces mascots for newest high schools: Archer HS Tigers and Mountain View HS Bears

In August of 2009 two new Gwinnett high schools-- Archer and Mountain View-- will open their doors. The facilities are under construction... The principals have been named... Next on the list comes working with each new school’s community to create a culture where high school students will thrive. A primary culture piece for any new high school is determining the school’s mascot and colors. That task is now complete as Gwinnett County Public Schools proudly welcomes the Archer Tigers and Mountain View Bears into its fold.

Over the last month, Principals Keith Chaney of Mountain View and Dr. Buck Buchanan of Archer have led representatives for their new schools through a deliberation process. Each school pulled together a committee, made up of students, parents, and community members representing all levels and all clusters that would send students to their respective new school. Each committee reviewed a number of options, ranking their choices of mascot and colors.

“Meeting with the community, parents, and students of the new Mountain View Cluster as we worked to select the high school mascot and colors was a highlight in my professional career,” says Principal Keith Chaney. “Leading this effort as we laid the groundwork for a school culture of expecting excellence in everything that we do was amazing.”

Dr. Buck Buchanan, principal of Archer, agrees, saying, “It has been a great beginning in the new Archer Cluster as students, parents and community members worked to select the mascot and colors to represent our school for generations to come. I am extremely excited about everyone working together to build a solid foundation of achievement in this wonderful community.”

John Upchurch and Todd Sims of Scholastic Images Inc./Balfour and Scott McIntyre of All American Specialties partnered with the new schools during the creative process. “As Partners in Education at Archer and Mountain View,” says Mr. Upchurch, “we have enjoyed working with these two communities designing the mascots, logos and choosing the school colors. We are extremely pleased with the end result and feel that we have created something unique and different that will help define these new school communities.”
