GCPS Board Meeting Summary for August 12, 2004

The following are highlights of the August 12, 2004, meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education. The official minutes of the meeting will be approved by the Board at its next monthly meeting.

School Board honors student achievement
-- The Gwinnett County Board of Education honored Brookwood HS graduate Christina Barrett as the 2004 recipient of the Alton C. Crews Scholarship. The $2,000 scholarship, which is named in honor of a former Gwinnett superintendent, is awarded to a student who plans to become a teacher in Georgia. Human Resources Recruitment Director Kelly Herndon introduced this year's honoree and described the rigorous selection process. Christina's parents, Dick and Linda Barrett, accompanied her. Mrs. Barrett is a Spanish teacher at Brookwood HS. Christina will attend Clemson University this fall, with plans to return to Gwinnett County as an elementary school teacher.
-- School Board members recognized several groups of students for award-winning performances in Odyssey of the Mind and Destination ImagiNation programs. These programs work to foster creative thinking and problem-solving skills in kindergarten through college-aged students. Students solve problems in a variety of areas, from building mechanical devices, such as spring-driven vehicles, to writing interpretations of literary classics. Teams of student members and coaches were honored, including:
--Central Gwinnett HS' Team B finished 1st in the Georgia Odyssey of the Mind competition in the "Classics... Fantastic Art - Division III" category. Team members included Adam Cunningham, Kyle Joyce, Bryant Kokaram, Diana Kunovac, Erika Marks, Josh Mitchell, and Mathis Wilkens. Team coaches were Gary and Sharon Wilkens and Danny and Lori Ybarra.
--Alton C. Crews MS' Destination ImagiNation team was recognized as the Renaissance Award Winner and 1st place winner in "The Plot and the Pendulum" problem. Team members included Catherine Debban, Hannah Frankel, Culley Horne, Lydia Hughes, Katie Kesley, Keri Lau, and Amanda Sullivan. The Crews MS team was coached by Phyllis Owen.
--Rebecca Minor ES' Destination ImagiNation team also placed 1st in state working on "The Plot and the Pendulum." Team members included Caitlin Campbell, Edward Fultz, Erick Membreno, Kawan Moore, D'Mitchell Morgan, Zack Perkinson, and Shante Roebuck. Coaches for the team were mother and daughter Patty and Melissa Owens. Melissa is a Berkmar HS student.
--Berkeley Lake ES' DestiNation ImagiNation team won 1st place, tackling the "DestiNations in Time" problem. Team members included Kevin Chen, Noah Hoback, Elizabeth Lohrmann, Paul McGuffin, Abby Powell, Sara Rogers, and Rowena Zheng. Coaches included Dave Lohrmann and Annette Rogers.
--Board members saluted a group of students, who, as 5th graders last year at Riverside ES, placed 1st in the state's Future Problem Solving Team competition in the Junior Division. Team members included Kirsten Carella, Sara Graham, Mary Stucke, and Erica Techo. This award-winning team was coached by Marion Sebastian.

Gwinnett County Board of Education approves name for South Gwinnett community stadium
The Board approved the request of the South Gwinnett High School Council that the school stadium be named the “Richard Snell Community Stadium.” Board members commended the late Richard Snell and the Snell family for their long-standing support of the South Gwinnett HS community.

Georgia School Boards Association Professional Development Program Certificates awarded to Board members
CEO/Superintendent J. Alvin Wilbanks presented certificates to School Board members on behalf of the Georgia School Boards Association. Mr. Wilbanks expressed appreciation to Board members for their commitment to continuous improvement, giving of their time to take part in these sessions that update School Board members on various public education issues.

School Board continues work to update policies
The following proposed policy revision was placed on the table for review until the September 9, 2004, Board meeting:
-- Policy JDF - School Admission of Suspended or Expelled Students-- Proposed minor changes reflect current legislation.
The Board of Education set aside its normal policy revision protocol of placing proposed policy revisions on the table until the next monthly meeting in order to adopt the following:
-- Policy JCD - Student Conduct Behavior Code-- Minor changes have been made to this policy to comply with the new requirements in state law.
