GCPS Board Meeting Summary for August 12, 1999

          Dr. Angela Pringle to lead Norcross ES
          The Gwinnett County Board of Education approved the appointment of Dr. Angela Pringle as principal of Norcross ES. Dr. Pringle, currently an assistant principal at Richards MS, joined GCPS last school year. Prior to that she was the principal of Westwood Middle School in Danville, Virginia (1995-98). Her career also includes service in the following Virginia schools: assistant principal at George Washington High School in Danville (1993-95) and at Frank W. Cox High School in Virginia Beach (1992-93), and mathematics teacher at George Washington High (1990-92), Princess Anne High in Virginia Beach (1986-90), and Halifax Middle in Halifax (1985-86).

          Gina Mooney Recognized by School Board as Alton C. Crews Scholarship Recipient
          This year's recipient of the Alton C. Crews Scholarship is Mary Virginia "Gina" Mooney, a 1999 graduate of North Gwinnett High School. As such, she received $1,500 from the Gwinnett County Board of Education to help pay for college expenses. Ms. Mooney plans to attend Shorter College in Rome, Georgia. The Alton C. Crews Scholarship provides financial help to a Gwinnett County high school senior who plans to become a teacher in Georgia.

          Other Leadership Appointments Approved
          The following leadership appointments were approved by the Board:
          • Lisa Burleson, assistant principal on special assignment, Center for Educational Programs
          • Wendy Powell, assistant principal, Lilburn MS
          • Joan Johnson, assistant principal, Nesbit ES
          • Cynthia Truett, assistant principal, Rockbridge ES
          • Lea Arnau, assistant principal, Shiloh HS
          • William Metzger, community school director, Shiloh HS

            Walton EMC to Provide Loan to Brookwood HS
            The Board of Education authorized the execution of an interest-free loan agreement with Walton Electric Membership Corporation (EMC) on behalf of Brookwood HS. The interest-free loan in the amount of $16,500 will be used to complete the installation of lighting for the school's softball field. The Brookwood HS softball boosters have committed to the retirement of the interest-free debt as quickly as possible.

            Board Receives FY2001 Budget Development Calendar
            The process of adopting the FY2001 budget will start in February 2000 when program managers submit their requests to the Budget Office, according to the Budget Development Calendar presented to the Board by Superintendent Alvin Wilbanks. Other key dates in the budget calendar include March 17, when the Superintendent's Recommended Budget is scheduled to be completed, a budget worksession for the Board on April 15, two public hearings (one in April on a date to be announced and one on May 4), and final adoption of the budget on May 11, 2000.

            GRS Annual Report Shared with School Board
            Each year, the Gwinnett Retirement System (GRS) issues an annual report to employees and retirees which shows the status of the retirement program and includes the outside auditor's opinion letter and the report of the GRS actuary. This year's report reflects that GRS is in sound financial condition and is positioned to provide the benefits outlined in the Plan Document.
