GCPS kicks off the 2012-13 school year
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) opened its 2012-13 school year on Aug. 6. and welcomed students into classrooms at 19 high schools, 26 middle schools, 77 elementary schools, and 10 special schools, including four charter schools. 
Constitutional amendment draws
attention of Gwinnett BOE, Barge
In the General Election this fall, Georgia voters will be asked to make a decision about a proposed amendment to the state's Constitution regarding the authorization of charter schools. The state superintendent stated his opposition to the amendment and the Gwinnett County Board of Education subsequently adopted a resolution in support of quality education.
New eCLASS resources
launched for students  

On the first day of school, a new Student Portal (MYeCLASS) went online systemwide for students at all grade levels, providing access to digital resources, including several online textbooks. Additional enhancements will be made to student, employee, and parent portals in coming months. Watch for more about this initiative throughout the school year and check out a video about MYeCLASS.

Bus safety begins before students boardGCPS debuts new bus safety video 

As the second largest transporter of students in the country, bus safety is first priority for the school district. This bus safety video highlighting  student safety for back to school includes tips to remember throughout the year. 

Instructional materials review 
set for Sept. 17-28  

Parents, staff, and community members are invited to review and share input on proposed curriculum materials, including K-12 non-fiction books, teacher resources for K-8 language arts, and Advanced Placement (AP) Latin materials. All materials will be available for review at the Instructional Support Center (ISC) Sept. 17-28.

Testing or Homework studentGCPS students top state CRCT averages  
Gwinnett county's average mean scores on the state's Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) were above the state averages in all content areas at all grade levels. A higher percentage of GCPS test-takers met or exceeded the state standard than their peers statewide at all grade levels.
Board of Education appoints new leaders    
Year-end retirements and transfers prompted a number of leadership appointments by the Gwinnett County Board of Education. Get acquainted with 12 new principals for 2012-13 with this slide show


Online Campus expands
to serve middle schoolGwinnett Online Campus logo
Gwinnett County Online Campus (GOC), Gwinnett's full-time online learning option, now serves students in grades 6-8. The charter school, which opened for high school students last year, has an enrollment of 236 students, including 78 middle schoolers. 
Conduct code set for student-athletes
For 2012-13, GCPS is implementing a uniform conduct code for student-athletes that details team-based consequences for violations such as being arrested, hazing, and using tobacco or alcohol. The punishment for each action varies. School-level discipline also would apply.

  •  The 2012-13 calendar is posted online, along with 2012-13 School Starting and Ending Times and the 2012-13 Testing Calendar.
  • On Mon., Sept. 3, all GCPS schools and offices will close in observance of Labor Day.
  • The Gwinnett County Board of Education will meet Thurs., Sept. 20 at 7 p.m. at the Instructional Support Center (ISC).
