Berkmar Middle students raise 'Fundreds' for lead poisoning awareness 
 Berkmar Middle students welcome the Fundred armored truck
Students at Berkmar Middle School collected 4,000 Fundred dollar bills-- original, hand-drawn interpretations of U.S. $100 bills-- to raise awareness of the hidden lead problem in New Orleans and other cities. A special armored truck made a stop at the school last month along its 18,000-mile
 pick-up route.

Give us your feedback on GCPS' Strategic Priorities for 2010-2020     
Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) is looking ahead to the next decade... and beyond. Students, parents, educators, and community members are invited to review the system's draft Strategic Priorities for 2010-2020 and share feedback through an online survey.
Superintendent's Recommended Budget for FY2011 available for review
The Board of Education has tentatively approved the Superintendent's Recommended Budget for FY2011. Additional budget hearings are scheduled for May 13 and May 20, with the final budget adoption on May 20 and the adoption of the millage rate in June.
Summer learning kicks off in JuneSummer School 2010 begins in June   
Summer session is available for high school students who need to make up a class or want to get ahead, including rising 9th graders who may take designated classes. Registration begins online May 10. GCPS will offer a free Academic Summer School for students in grades 3-8 who have not met local and state promotion requirements for their grade level. Parents of students who qualify will learn more about summer school locations and times from their child's school.
GCPS values your participationParticipate in the 2010-11 GEMS Oversight Committee 
Citizens are invited to apply to serve on the GEMS Oversight Committee, which completes an annual review of the Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. Community members serve four-year terms. The application deadline is
June 1, 2010.

The Spring 2010 issue of Communiqué shares a snapshot of how our students and employees contribute to Gwinnett's quality of life, why families are important education partners, and how business and community partnerships support our schools. Time flies... and so do the daysTake note of these dates... 
  • Don't miss the opportunity to attend a 2010 Area Board Meeting. Two remaining dates are Tues., April 27, and Thurs., April 29. In this GCPS TV segment, Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, 2010 Board Chairman, explains why Area Board Meetings are special. 
  • Please plan to attend the Vision for Public Education in Georgia's Community Conversation event at the Instructional Support Center (ISC) on Tues., May 4 at 6:30 p.m. Parents, students, educators, and community members are welcome to share their input and ideas.
  • Kindergarten registration is May 6 at local schools. Families of rising kindergartners can learn more on the system's web site about what to bring for registration and what to expect in Kindergarten.
  • The Class of 2010 graduates in May. The graduation schedule includes dates, times, and locations of ceremonies for Gwinnett's 18 high schools.
