HONORS
An awards ceremony is scheduled on Nov.19 at Phoenix High to honor the International Student Media Festival (ISMF) winners with trophies and certificates. Two Phoenix High students won 29 awards at the ISMF in October, including six judges’ favorites. A total of 85 GCPS entries received awards at the ISMF, including two “Best of Festival”, the highest honor awarded, to students from Gwin Oaks Elementary and Harmony Elementary. The students also won at the Gwinnett Media Festival and the Georgia Media Festival. These competitions qualified the students to enter their projects in the ISMF competition. Seven Phoenix projects won at all three levels. The remaining 22 winners were in the single photography category, which only exists at the International level. UPCOMING

GCPS invites students with disabilities and their parents to meet with college representatives and learn about higher education options. Topics include financial options, accommodations at the postsecondary level, and preparing for college during high school. Representatives from the military also will be present. ONGOING
Registration information for Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology (GSMST) for the 2010-11 freshman class is available on the GCPS web site and on the GSMST web site. Middle school information sessions about GSMST will take place in November and December, as well. The registration deadline is January 22, 2010. GSMST is a charter school and therefore enrollment is open to all current Gwinnett County 8th grade students who complete the 8th grade requirements and who reside in Gwinnett County. The school focuses on advanced and challenging studies in the fields of engineering, biosciences, and emerging technology. The rigorous course work at GSMST may not meet the needs of all students. As this is a school of choice, it is highly recommended that parents and students review the GSMST curriculum and learn more about the school’s offerings before making a decision to register.

GCPS middle school art teachers have 118 student works of art on display at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Concourse E through December as part of the Atlanta Airport Art Show. This artwork will be on display throughout the holiday season. A tour is scheduled for Dec. 21 at 10 a.m. For more information, call Trickum Middle Teacher Dr. Aimée Burgamy at 770-921-2705.
