During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Nesbit Elementary will transform five classrooms into Georgia habitats on Sept. 3 at 9:15 a.m. Students will take a hands-on approach to learn about plants, animals, and adaptations in each environment as they transition through the mountains, coastal plains, piedmont, ocean, and swamp. Centerville Elementary will sponsor an activity for students and their fathers and father figures on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The Dads Of Great Students (D.O.G.S.) Program will begin the school year at Centerville Elementary with a Watch DOGS Pizza Night in the cafeteria. Keith Schumacher, National Training Coordinator for Watch DOGS, will be the guest speaker for the event. Watch Dogs is a safe schools initiative of the National Center for Fathering. The students, faculty, and staff at Gwinnett’s eight new facilities invite their communities to take part in the formal dedication of the buildings Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) opened for the first time in August. “Meet the Author - Susan Stockdale” Author and illustrator Susan Stockdale began her children’s book career with the publication of “Some Sleep Standing Up.” This story was soon followed by “Nature’s Paintbrush: The Patterns and Colors Around You” —selected as an Outstanding Science Trade Book for Children by the National Science Teachers Association, — and “Carry Me! Animal Babies on the Move”, and “Fabulous Fishes.” On the program, Susan Stockdale describes how she creates her work in terms of words, images, and format. This 30-minute program airs Sept. 6-11 at 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

“Career Day - Alternative Energy” The first program in the Career Day series focuses on alternative energy and green design. Students get an up-close look at a working solar home with a one-of-a-kind tour from an energy efficiency engineer, go through an energy audit with an energy services consultant, and get a special peek at the research and development being conducted at the University of Maryland Energy Research Center. This 30-minute program airs Sept. 6-11 at 1:30 p.m.

Spanish for Educators - Level 2” This GCPS original 10-part series is taught by Elisa Brown, Hopkins Elementary assistant principal. This program is an introduction to the Spanish language, tailored especially for educators and other school employees. Hour-long segments will air at 11 a.m. Monday-Sunday, through Nov. 5 (a new class will air each week, beginning on Monday).

Tune in to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ educational access channel for education programs and information. TV cable channels and providers include: Charter on Channel 22, and Comcast on Channel 24 and 26. September is Library Card Sign-up Month.

September 6 is Labor Day, a systemwide holiday.

Patriots Day is September 11.

A regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., September 16, 2010, at the Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Rd. N.W. in Suwanee.

September 15-October 15 is Hispanic Heritage Month.

September 17 is Citizenship Day.

Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT) will be administered to elementary and middle school students September 20-24.

The Georgia High School Writing Test will be administered on September 29 for 11th grade students.
