During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

HONORS
Gwinnett County Online Campus has been awarded the 2006 Silver Award for Best Practice in Distance Learning Programming by the U.S. Distance Learning Association, the nation’s premier distance learning association. The award is presented to organizations that have designed and delivered outstanding and comprehensive Best Practices for individual programs or a series of programs through online, videoconferencing, and satellite delivery technologies. Three GCPS high schools were among the “Top 25” Georgia high schools recognized by Gov. Sonny Perdue for having the highest average SAT scores for 2006. The schools are Brookwood—1629, Duluth—1593, and Parkview—1590. Deborah Harris and Kelly Walter of Meadowcreek High presented at the National High Schools That Work Conference in Orlando, Fla. They presented on the Meadowcreek High School 9th Grade Success Academy. For more information, call 770-381-9680.

UPCOMING
Beginning in September, Duluth High will extend the operating hours of the school’s media center to 6 p.m. on Thursdays for Wildcat Study Time. Students may use computers, study, work in groups, and complete classroom projects with the help of media staff. The media center opens at 6:45 a.m. each school day. The first meeting of the Duluth High Reader’s Rally Club is set for Sept. 14 at 2:15 p.m. in the media center. The club offers students a place on the school’s reading bowl team, and an opportunity to vote for a favorite book from the Teen Peach Nominee list. The Peachtree Ridge High Roaring Lions Marching Band will perform its 2006 show “Going Somewhere?” on Sept. 16 at the Suwanee Day Parade. In addition, the band will enter three marching competitions this year. One competition will be held at Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. The band will also travel to Hawaii to participate in the Waikiki Holiday Parade in November. For more information and a schedule, visit www.prbba.org.

Mill Creek High will host a visit from award-winning author Jackie Hardrick on Sept. 29. Ms. Hardrick will visit with small groups of students in the media center, and be available for book signings after school. GCPS TV
“GCPS Focus” This week on GCPS Focus...Quality-Plus teaching in Gwinnett schools, an international professional learning experience, planning for growth, and a look at Gwinnett’s newest students. This 30-min. program airs Sept. 11-17 at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m., and 11 p.m.

“Spanish for Educators” This program, a valuable language resource and learning opportunity, returns to GCPS TV on Monday, September 11. This 10-part series is an introduction to the Spanish language and is tailored especially for educators and other school employees. Viewers tuning in will have the opportunity to learn key phrases and basic vocabulary for use during the school day and in the community. This GCPS TV original series will air in hour-long segments at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday–Sunday, September 11 through November 19 (a new class will air each week, beginning on Monday).

“English...Yes, I Can! (Series 1)” This video telecourse is designed to teach English literacy skills to adult learners. Series 1 is scheduled to air through Oct. 31 on GCPS TV. A new 60-minute class airs daily Monday–Thursday at 9 p.m., and repeats at 1 a.m. On Sunday, viewers can see the week’s programs from noon to 4 p.m.
