During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

HONORS
The Duluth High geography team finished 2nd in the nation on the National Geography Challenge in their division. Jason Yu tied for first place in the nation in the ninth grade division and Sam Aziz tied as the national winner for grades 10-12. Corley Elementary was awarded two grants from the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Georgia Department of Education for participation in the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable Program. Nutritious snacks are provided to students through the program. Both grants total more than $80,000 in funds. Collins Hill High teams won two 2009-10 state championships recently. The boys soccer team and the girls golf team placed 1st in state in their competitions. In addition, the Collins Hill High athletics program was recognized with the 2009-10 Regions Director’s Cup. For more information, call 770-682-4100.

UPCOMING
The Peachtree Ridge Cluster Foundation is presenting Flicks for the Foundation, a community movie night, on Aug. 27 at 7 p.m. on the practice field. Families are invited to bring chairs and blankets to enjoy an evening under the stars with the movie “Shrek.” Coolers are not allowed. Concessions will be available for a donation to the Peachtree Ridge High Touchdown Club. Centerville Elementary will sponsor an activity for students and their fathers and father figures on Sept. 10 at 6:30 p.m. The Dads Of Great Students (D.O.G.S.) Program will begin the school year at Centerville Elementary with a Watch DOGS Pizza Night in the cafeteria. Keith Schumacher, National Training Coordinator for Watch DOGS, will be the guest speaker for the event. Watch Dogs is a safe schools initiative of the National Center for Fathering. The students, faculty, and staff at Gwinnett’s eight new facilities invite their communities to take part in the formal dedication of the buildings Gwinnett County Public Schools (GCPS) opened for the first time in August. “GCPS Focus” This month Focus salutes the inaugural class of the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame, welcomes new teachers and leaders to a new school year, and celebrates an extraordinary act of giving at Lilburn Middle. Join us for these stories and more on GCPS Focus - your news show about Gwinnett County Public School. This 30-minute program airs this week at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“ParenTVision - Behind the Scenes” Join host Margaret Cheeley, Collins Hill Counselor, and Connect With Kids(CWK) Network President/CEO Stacey DeWitt for this behind the scenes look at ParenTVision and the upcoming season. This 30-minute program airs Aug. 30-Sept. 5 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

“Spanish for Educators - Level 1” A GCPS TV original series, this 10-part program taught by Elisa Brown, assistant principal at Hopkins Elementary, is an introduction to the Spanish language and is tailored especially for educators and other school employees. Viewers will learn key phrases and basic vocabulary for use during the school day and in the community. Each Monday through August 29, a new segment will air at 11 a.m., repeating daily through Sunday in that time slot.

Tune in to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ educational access channel for education programs and information. TV cable channels and providers include: Charter on Channel 22, and Comcast on Channel 24 and 26.
