During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

News You Can Use… will return January 15, 2004.

Duluth Middle’s academic team competed with tens of thousands of students in the U.S. (48 states and the District of Columbia) and several Other countries in the 43rd Knowledge Master Open in December. More than 2,500 middle school, junior high, and high school teams competed. The Duluth Middle team earned enough points to place 1st in state, 1st in the nation, and 1st overall among 820 middle schools. Students on the Duluth Middle team are: Archit Bhise, Allison Burrell, Yue Chan, Jenny Choi, Scott Cummins, Shilpa Darivamula, Jessica Efird, Harrison Falk, Claire Huang, Brian Hysell, Caroline Kercher, Rebecca Leo, Alice Li, Scott Nguyen, Roger Ou (captain), Daniel Starovasnik, Abhishek Tumaty, Mary Thumaty, Sean Valentine, Michelle Wang, Fan Wu, and Serena Zhang. Parkview High earned a 5th place ranking in the Math Honor Society competition in December for Region III, which includes Mississippi, Alabama, Georgia and Florida. This is the first of three rounds of tests throughout the year. The 2004-2005 Mu Alpha Theta "Log1" Contest is a national mathematics competition administered by National Assessment & Testing— for Mu Alpha Theta—, the national high school mathematics honor society. In the Alpha division, William Drobny and Stephanie Wang placed 3rd and 15th respectively. SAT tests will take place at Buchanan High School of Technology throughout the academic year. The SAT I test will be administered on Jan. 22 in building F. Preregistration is required. The new SAT, which will include a writing portion, will be administered beginning in the spring of 2005. For more information, call 770-326-8000.

Grayson Elementary 5th grade students from the classes of Apryl Kathe and Judy Vanderford created holiday artwork to decorate World Airways airplanes. These planes transport military personnel from Iraq to Atlanta. For more information, call 770-963-7189.

The Care Team at Richard Hull Middle established the “Santana Holiday Stocking Fund” in memory of Santana O’Neal Jarboe, a Richard Hull Middle teacher who passed away this past spring. Funds were raised by selling stockings cut out of construction paper. Decorated stockings were displayed on classroom doors for judging in a schoolwide competition. Junior Girl Scout Troop 21128 from J.G. Dyer Elementary collected more than 200 toys for Toys for Tots. In the fall the troop sponsored a coat drive at the school and collected 110 coats for the Foster Children's Foundation. For more information, call Barbara Webb at 770-963-6214.

“ArtStage-Sounds of the Season” Celebrate the joy of the holidays with GCPS TV as “ArtStage” travels to school across Gwinnett County spotlighting student musical performances. This 60-minute program airs Dec. 20-26 at 2 and 8 p.m.

“The Author in You-Barbara Robinson” Known by students everywhere for her unforgettable book “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever” and its hilarious sequel “The Best School Year Ever,” author Barbara Robinson joins GCPS TV for a special edition of “The Author in You.” This 30-minute program airs Dec. 27 - Jan. 2 at 2 and 7 p.m.
