During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

FRIDAY & SATURDAY
Brookwood High will present special encore shows of “Godspell” on January 6 and 7, at 7 p.m. in the theatre. Adult tickets may be purchased for $7 and $6 for students and senior citizen tickets. General admission tickets are available at the door on performance nights. Brookwood High’s advanced musical production students won first place in Region and 4th in State competitions with this production.

HONORS
DeNelle West, Coordinator for Teacher Development, and Donna Alexander, Coordinator for the Teach Gwinnett Program, recently presented at the Learning Forward National Conference. The session, “A Recipe for Cultivating Quality Professional Development,” provided a comprehensive framework for equipping staff development leaders with the knowledge, skills, and resources to support job-embedded learning. Participants were provided planning tools for immediate use upon return to their school/district. This session was also 1 of 10 sessions to be selected for inclusion in the association’s Virtual Conference.

Parkview High student Tim Wu finished as a finalist in the team category and won a $20,000 scholarship from the national Siemens math and science competition. For more information, call 770-921-2874.

The Collins Hill High Girls Softball Team won the 2010 AAAAA State Championship. This is the second consecutive state championship and third overall state championship for the Collins Hill High softball program. For more information, call 770-682-4100.

GCPS schools raised a total amount of $1,041,862 for this past year’s Relay For Life event benefitting the American Cancer Society. Among the 116 school system teams participating, 32 school teams and three central office teams raised $10,000 or more. Those schools are Brookwood High, Cooper Elementary, Couch Middle, Craig Elementary, Creekland Middle, Crews Middle, Collins Hill High, Dacula Elementary, Duncan Creek Elementary, Grayson High, Jones Middle, Lanier Middle, Mason Elementary, McConnell Middle, Mill Creek High, Minor Elementary, Norcross High, North Gwinnett High, North Gwinnett Middle, Parkview High, Peachtree Ridge High, Pinckneyville Middle, Puckett’s Mill Elementary, Riverside Elementary, Rock Springs Elementary, Shiloh Middle, Simpson Elementary, Snellville Middle, Sugar Hill Elementary, Taylor Elementary, Trickum Middle, and Winn Holt Elementary.

UPCOMING
The United Ebony Society of Gwinnett County Inc. will hold the annual Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. parade in downtown Lawrenceville on Jan. 17 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Old Courthouse and ending at Central Gwinnett High. In addition to the parade, the program will highlight student essays on Dr. King. This one hour event will take place at 11:45 a.m. in the theater at Central Gwinnett High. The essay topic is “Your Character Builds Your Future.” For more information, call counselor Marlene Taylor-Crawford of Britt Elementary at 770-736-4430.

The Collins Hill High media center will host the annual panel discussion for Phi Delta Kappa, a teacher organization, on Jan. 25 at 5:30 p.m. This year, technology and 21st century skills will be the topic. Parents, teachers, and community members are welcome and encouraged to attend. The panel will introduce themselves and discuss their role with technology, followed by an open forum question session. Participants may submit questions by emailing Dr. Stacy Byous at stacy_byous@gwinnett.k12.ga.us.

The 2011 Gwinnett County spelling bee will take place at Central Gwinnett High on Jan. 29 at 8:30 a.m. Registration will take place beginning at 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. The oral bee begins approximately 30 minutes after the written portion of the bee. “GCPS Focus” This month’s program takes a look at how Gwinnett celebrated the Broad Prize win, explores how technology is creating new and different structures for student learning, and shares the touching story of two very special Dacula High students…join us for these stories and more on GCPS Focus— your news show about Gwinnett County Public Schools. This 30-minute program airs this week at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“The Amazing Trade Shop Science Race! Colonial Williamsburg” Root for student contestants as they compete to discover the physics, chemistry, and simple machines employed by Colonial Williamsburg’s trades people to reconstruct an eighteenth-century coffeehouse. Quirky “Professor Eddie” hosts this engaging science game show. This 60-minute program airs live on Jan. 13 at 1 p.m.

Tune in to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ educational access channel for education programs and information. TV cable channels and providers include: Charter on Channel 22, and Comcast on Channel 24 and 26. January 17 is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a systemwide holiday.

January 19 is the Georgia Writing Assessment for 8th graders.

A regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., January 20, 2011, at the Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Rd. NW in Suwanee.

February is National African American History Month and National Technical Education Month.

February 2 and 3 are early release days for elementary and middle schools for parent-teacher conferences.

February 6 is Scout Sunday.

National SkillsUSA Week is February 6-12.

February 7-11 is National School Counseling Week.
