During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Xinyi (Alice) Li, of Duluth High, won 1st place in a national Holocaust Remembrance Project essay contest. She was awarded a top scholarship of $18,000 and a trip to Washington, D.C. For more information, visit

Brookwood High and Duluth High were included among the 25 Georgia schools with the highest SAT scores. Several Gwinnett schools were top performers on sections of the test: Reading– Brookwood High; Math– Brookwood, Duluth, Norcross, North Gwinnett, and Parkview high schools; and Writing– Brookwood High. Duluth High Principal Pat Blenke, traveled to Washington, D.C. recently as a representative on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Secondary Principals and the Georgia Association of Secondary Schools Principals. Members met with Congress regarding education issues. Mr. Blenke met with Congressmen Johnny Isakson, Nathan Deal, and Jack Kingston (photos available upon request). Arcado Elementary will hold a week-long celebration honoring grandparents from Sept. 10-14. Activities will include lunch with grandparents-- including a complementary framed photo commemorating the day. Each grade level will host grandparents on a different day of the week. Ivy Creek Elementary will host the school’s annual Patriot’s Day celebration on Sept. 11 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Community members and families from Ivy Creek Elementary and Glenn C. Jones Middle are invited to this event which promotes patriotism and community spirit. A sing-a-long will be led by Ivy Creek students with musical performances by Glenn C. Jones Middle students and the North Georgia College and State University’s Patriot Choir. The program will end with a Freedom Walk around the Ivy Creek track. Part science and nature center, part energy institute, and part history center, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC) is a collaborative educational initiative. Partners are GCPS, Gwinnett County Government, the University of Georgia, and the Center’s foundation. “Math Rules!” This innovative and educational GCPS TV math series, now in its second season, is designed especially for elementary students and their parents. “Math Rules” combines games and activities that promote flexibility and fluency in mathematics. The September episode features students learning the basics of Witzzle Pro and Cross the River. During the program, a new “I’ll Never Use This” segment shows students how the concepts they learn in the classroom are applicable in real life. Be sure to tune in and discover “who” our newest character is! This 30-min. program airs Sept. 10-15 at 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.

“Spanish for Educators, Level 1” This 10-part series is an introduction to the Spanish language, tailored especially for educators and other school employees. Viewers tuning in will have the opportunity to learn key phrases and basic vocabulary for use during the school day and in the community. This GCPS TV original series will air in hour-long segments at 11 a.m. and 8 p.m. Monday-Sunday, through October 21 (a new class will air each week, beginning on Monday).

“English...Yes, I Can! (Series 2)” This video telecourse is designed to teach English literacy skills to adult learners. Series 2 is scheduled to air through Sept. 27 on GCPS TV. A new 60-minute class airs Monday–Thursday at 9 p.m., and repeats at 1 a.m. On Sunday, viewers can see the week’s programs from noon to 4 p.m.
