During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

HONORS
The Dacula High Marketing Program earned Industry Certification, awarded by Sales and Marketing Executives of Atlanta and the Georgia Department of Education. For more information, call 770-963-6664.

Beth Arnow, coordinator of ESOL and the International Newcomer Center, is one of 53 educators from across the U.S. participating in the invitation-only Oxford University's Round Table Discussion on Addressing the Educational and Social Consequences of Poverty. Ms. Arnow will present her paper, "Addressing Linguistic and Cultural Diversity: A Systemic Approach," to delegates, sharing GCPS's districtwide support mechanisms for our limited English proficient and culturally diverse student populations. The Duluth High Interact Club was named “Club of the Year” for Interact District 6910. The club scrapbook, designed by Dhruti Patel, received the “Best Scrapbook” award. For their work in Interact, two students earned scholarships. Judith Kim received a $1,000 scholarship and Kaushal Amin received a $500 scholarship For more information, call 770-476-5206.

The Norcross High boy's basketball team won 2nd place in state competition. Both teams will be recognized by the Gwinnett County Commissioners on April 19 at 2 p.m. at the Gwinnett County Justice and Administration Building. The teams will be recognized by the Norcross City Council as well. For more information, call 770-448-3674.

The Norcross High Winter Guard won at competition from among 14 guards in their class at Kennesaw Mountain High. The guard performed "Color Blind." For more information, call 770-448-3674.

Norcross High student Lindsay Eierman is one of five state finalists in the AAA Travel High School Challenge. More than 64,000 students competed from across the country. Lindsay’s score was one of the top five in the state. For more information, call 770-448-3674.

More than 600 students participated in the 2005 Foreign Language Association of Georgia (FLAG) annual Spoken Language Contest on March 5 at Peachtree Ridge High. For a complete list of participants and students who placed, call Sue Peterson at 770-822-6508.

The Gwinnett County chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children announced that the Atlanta Therapaws chapter of Therapy Dogs International earned an Outstanding Group Award for the 2004-05 school year. Gerard Willingham is the grand champion of the 2005 Trickum Science Fair and will receive a trophy. Sayan Chatterjee and Gerard Willingham earned 1st place and will receive prize packages from the Parkview High’s National Science Honor Society. ONGOING
Richard Hull Middle is sponsoring an afterschool running club two days a week through the middle of May. Students will be instructed in running techniques, stretches, drills, and games. For more information, call 770-232-3200.

UPCOMING
Norcross Elementary will sponsor an “Empty Bowls Dinner” on March 29 at 6 p.m. in the cafeteria. Adult tickets may be purchased the night of the dinner for $5. Student tickets are $2. The Annistown Elementary PTA will sponsor “Bruster's School Night” at Bruster’s in Snellville on March 30 from 6 to 9 p.m. For more information, call 770-979-2950.

Norcross Elementary and Annistown Elementary will host a Witzzle Pro Math Tournament on March 30 from 4 to 5:30 p.m. in the cafeteria at Annistown. Wittzle Pro is a math game which emphasizes the rapid recall of operational facts, such as multiplication and addition. For more information, call Pat Buttram at 770-979-2950.

A group of Mountain Park Elementary 3rd grade students will host a book reception on March 31 at 2:30 p.m. in the media center. Students are reading “well used” library books, taking Accelerated Reader quizzes, and writing book summaries. The students will make new book covers in art class and are creating invitations for their parents and friends to attend the reception where the “new” books will be displayed. The Duluth High Chorus has several events scheduled. The New York City Performance Tour takes place April 2-5. The Classical Voice recital will take place on April 21. GCPS TV
“The Author in You-Jose Aruego” Learn how to draw with famous illustrator-author Jose Aruego on GCPS TV's "The Author in You." Mr. Aruego, a successful illustrator of picture books for children and recipient of the "Outstanding Filipino Abroad in the Arts Award," demonstrates his techniques for turning simple line drawings into lively animal characters. Books illustrated by Mr. Aruego include Leo the Late Bloomer, Milton the Early Riser and Gregory the Terrible Eater. This 30-min. program airs March 28-April 3 at 2 and 7 p.m.

“Happenin' Habitats-PW Network” As thoughts turn to spring, tune in for a 30-minute broadcast that takes students on a wild learning adventure with the National Wildlife Federation's Schoolyard Habitats Program. This show airs March 28-April 2 at 10:30 a.m. and 5:30 p.m.

“English...Yes, I Can! (Series 2)” English...Yes, I Can (Series 2) is a video telecourse designed to teach English literacy skills to adult learners. Series 2 is scheduled to air March 28 through April 28 on GCPS TV. The 60-minute program airs Monday–Thursday at 9 p.m. and again at 1 a.m., and Sunday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

March is Music in Our Schools Month, National Middle Level Education Month, National Nutrition Month, Women’s History Month, Social Work Month, and Youth Art Month.

The Georgia High School Graduation Test will be administered to juniors March 28-31.

April is Keep America Beautiful Month, National Poetry Month, and School Library Media Month.

April 4-8 is Spring Break for schools.

April 8 is a systemwide spring holiday for GCPS.

The next regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., April 14, 2005, at Lawrenceville East, located at 723 Hi-Hope Road in Lawrenceville.

GCPS’ Area Board Meetings will be held in April. The meetings are held in each of the Board member’s districts and give staff and community members an opportunity to get an update on school system issues. In addition, a public forum at each meeting allows for participants to discuss education topics with their elected officials. Following is a listing of the meeting dates. The program will begin at 7 p.m. in the host school’s theater. Refreshments will be served beginning at 6:30 p.m.
