During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

Mill Creek High will host a Reindeer Run and breakfast on Dec. 11 at 8 a.m. The race will begin at the Hamilton Mill United Methodist Church. The entry fee is $25. This fee includes a T-shirt. Registration may be completed the day of the race. There will be awards for different age groups of racers. Following the race a pancake breakfast with Santa will take place at the church. Tickets are $5. The events will benefit the Kiwanis Club and the American Cancer Society. For more information visit

Brookwood High was the highest-ranking school in the country— scoring 87 of 110 possible points in this year’s WordMaster challenge. Students demonstrate mastery of the printed word in this national competition for high school students, requiring close reading and analysis of poetry and prose. Nesbit Elementary will host a performance of “Auntie Claus,” a book by Elise Primavera, performed by the “C.L.U.B.” 5th grade creative arts team of actors. The show will take place on Dec. 14 at 7 p.m. and Dec. 15 at 10:30 a.m. and 10:45 a.m. in the cafeteria. There is no charge for this holiday play. For more information, call 770-414-2740.

Duncan Creek Elementary 3rd grade students are taking part in an afterschool skating program that runs through Dec 17. Skatetime begins at 2:30 p.m. and takes place in PE class in the gym. Students are learning the benefits of skating and to increase their ability to skate. For more information, call Dayna Alkire, Duncan Creek Elementary teacher, at 678-714-5800.

Parents are encouraged to sign up for the Gwinnett County Public Schools Parent Portal. High school exams start next week and parents may have some questions about their student’s grades and schoolwork. Sometimes kids aren’t the best communicators when it comes to answering questions about school. That’s where Gwinnett County Public Schools’ Parent Portal comes in. is the go-to source for Gwinnett parents looking for information about their child’s academic career. On the go2 Parent Portal parents will find student grades, attendance and course history, discipline record, schedule, and test results. The Parent Portal offers safe and secure access to key information about a child’s education, anytime from anyplace. All that is needed is a computer with Internet access and a user ID and password. To get started, parents will need to complete the registration form available at the child’s school and return the form in person to the school. “ArtStage: Sounds of the Season” Join GCPS TV for a favorite holiday tradition - the annual airing of Sounds of the Season. Featuring student performances from around the county, this lively production is the perfect start to your holiday. This 60 minute program airs Dec. 13-19 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m.

“Telling Stories - Linda Sue Park” Linda Sue Park discusses her recent books and provides a look at what inspired them. Ms. Park also talks about her diverse interests that include perfecting her craft, a desire to explore her heritage, her passion for baseball, and “sijo,” a Korean form of poetry. This 60 minute program airs Dec. 13-18 at 1 p.m.

UPCOMING EVENT ON GCPS TV: Families can tune in to the next episode of the “Love that Book!” series with author Carmen Deedy (Starts Jan. 17).

December 15-17 is early release for high school exams.

A regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., December 16, 2010, at the Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Rd. NW in Suwanee.

December 20-31 is Winter Break for schools.

January 3 is a Teacher Planning/Staff Development, student holiday.

Students return to school on January 4.

Part science and nature center, part energy institute, and part history center, the Gwinnett Environmental & Heritage Center (GEHC) is a collaborative educational initiative. Partners are GCPS, Gwinnett County Government, the University of Georgia, and the Center’s foundation.
