News You Can Use - 08/27/2012

During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

A Gwinnett County Public Schools Tip Sheet For The News Media

The Brookwood Cluster’s night at Coolray Field is scheduled to take place Friday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. as the Gwinnett Braves take on the Syracuse Chiefs. Attendees will celebrate Brookwood community pride and spirit with a night of family, fun and fireworks. Brookwood Cluster students will march in a pregame parade. The Brookwood High Chorus will sing the National Anthem, and the Brookwood High drumline will perform. A student will throw out the first pitch of the game and elementary students will lead the 7th inning stretch singing. The Dr. Jim L. Markham Golf Classic at Chateau Elan Golf Club is scheduled for Oct. 8. The event, named in honor of Mill Creek High’s retiring principal, is an 18-hole Foursome Golf Scramble benefitting Relay for Life. The schedule of events includes a 7 a.m. registration, breakfast, silent auction, and practice. Golf begins at 9 a.m. and there will be awards and prizes. Jones Middle Public Speaking and Journalism teacher Catalina Kreider will take the student mentors on a field trip to Four Oaks Manor for a formal luncheon on Oct. 23. Students will share their etiquette projects and experience a formal meal using the knowledge they gained during class. Nearly 90 students and parents will attend this event. Ms. Kreider leads the Student Leadership Academy and is the Student Mentor Advisor. For more information, call 770-904-5450.

Gwinnett County Public Schools invites parents and members of the community to join GCPS staff members by participating in a review of proposed curriculum materials. Parents may provide input on the proposed materials by participating in the public review. GCPS holds an extensive review before adopting materials for classroom use. Materials submitted by publishers are reviewed by teachers, administrators, and parents for alignment with the school system’s Academic Knowledge and Skills (AKS) curriculum. During the review, scheduled to run from September 17-28, GCPS staff and members of the Gwinnett community will review non-fiction books for grades K-12, teacher resources for grades K-8 Language Arts, and Advanced Placement Latin materials. Reviews are scheduled as follows:
