During the school year, the Department of Communication & Media Relations produces a media tip sheet called "News You Can Use, which is distributed to metro Atlanta news outlets electronically. This publication provides school and system news, including recent honors, upcoming events, calendar items, and photo opportunities at local schools and central office locations. The tip sheet is sent out at the end of each week, and covers news and GCPS items of interest for the coming 7-10 days.

FRIDAY
The Duluth High Student Government program will host “Flix on the Field,” on May 14. The movie “Ferris Bueller's Day Off” will begin playing at dusk around 8:40 p.m. Family members and friends are invited to attend for a $1 donation to benefit Relay For Life. The Duluth High Theater will host “Duluth’s Got Talent” beginning at 7 p.m. in the theater, on the same night. For more information, call 770-476-5206.

HONORS
Creekland, Dacula, Hull, and Sweetwater middle schools participated in the 2nd annual Junior Solar Sprint sponsored by Jackson EMC. Sweetwater Middle came in 6th at the regional event. UPCOMING
Support Gwinnett schools and enjoy a Gwinnett Braves baseball game when you purchase a $12 ticket to the Gwinnett County Sports Hall of Fame induction ceremony on Sunday, June 6, at Coolray Field in Buford. A portion of the ticket price for this inaugural event will go to the Gwinnett County Public Schools Foundation Fund, Inc. Ticketholders also receive a raffle ticket for a chance to win some great prizes, including a flat screen TV, round-trip AirTran tickets, a round of golf for a foursome at Canongate, a $100 Publix card, tickets to Stone Mountain, Georgia Aquarium admission, and more. Tickets will be mailed by June 1. The June 6 event begins at 2:05 p.m., and includes the induction ceremony, the Gwinnett Braves vs. Scranton Wilkes-Barre Yankees game, and a silent auction to benefit the Foundation. Ivy Creek Elementary staff members are supporting a fundraising opportunity “Golf Fore Grace” at the Hamilton Mill Golf Course on June 16. Proceeds will benefit the family of Ivy Creek Elementary student Grace Callahan, who was diagnosed with an enlarged heart at 11 days of age. Grace recently received a long-awaited heart transplant. RECENTLY
The class of Minor Elementary fourth grade teacher Jenna Reid is participating in Farmer D’s Organics, an organic garden program funded through a grant. Seeds have been planted in raised beds by students, and will provide the school with a vegetable garden. Students will plant a Three Sisters Native American Garden consisting of corn, beans, and squash. For more information, call 770-925-9543.

“GCPS Focus” This month’s program celebrates the school district’s selection as a finalist for the Broad Prize for Urban Education for the second consecutive year. We’ll also turn the spotlight on a few members of the Class of 2010, and make a visit to the classroom of the future. Join us for these stories and more on GCPS Focus - your news show about Gwinnett County Public School. This 30-min. program airs this week at 6:30 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 3:30 p.m., 7:30 p.m. and 11 p.m.

“ArtStage: Tapestry” Join GCPS TV for a virtual tour of the 2010 Tapestry Art Exhibit, featuring creative art work from schools across Gwinnett County. Hosted by Dr. Aimee Burgamy, Trickum Middle art teacher, this student-intern produced program showcases the artistry and talents of GCPS students in grades K-12. This 60-minute program airs May 17-23 at 2 and 8 p.m.

“Spanish for Educators - Level 2” A GCPS TV original series, this 10-part program taught by Elisa Brown, assistant principal at Hopkins Elementary, is an introduction to the Spanish language and is tailored especially for educators and other school employees. Viewers will learn key phrases and basic vocabulary for use during the school day and in the community. Each Monday through June 20, a new segment will air at 11 a.m., repeating daily through Sunday in that time slot.

Tune in to Gwinnett County Public Schools’ educational access channel for education programs and information. TV cable channels and providers include: Charter on Channel 22, and Comcast on Channel 24 and 26. CALENDAR
May is National Physical Fitness and Sports Month, and Better Hearing and Speech Month.

The Georgia End of Course Test Window for grades 9-12 is scheduled for May 10-21.

May 17-23 is Custodial Appreciation Week.

The next regular meeting of the Gwinnett County Board of Education will be held at 7 p.m., May 20, 2010, at the Instructional Support Center (ISC), located at 437 Old Peachtree Rd. N.W. in Suwanee.

May 24-26 is early release for high school final exams.

May 26 is the last day of school.

May 31 is Memorial Day, a systemwide holiday.
