A Look at 2006-07 Honors

Recent State and National Honors and Recognitions...
GCPS had 26 students ranked in the top 10 spots on the National French Exam and 37 in the top 10 at state. A Parkview High student ranked #1 in the state and nation in French I and another Parkview student was #2 in the state in French III.

Four students— two from Norcross High and two from Parkview High— earned the highest
score in Georgia on the National Spanish Exam in their respective levels of study.

The National PTA honored three Gwinnett students for their entries in the Reflections Fine Arts competition.

Mill Creek High's orchestra placed 2nd in the National Freedom Festival in New York City.

Students from Richard Hull Middle earned state and national recognition for their scores on the National Science League Exam.

Two Sweetwater Middle students earned perfect scores in national WordMasters Challenge - Gold Division.

Twenty-three scholarships were awarded to GCPS students through various programs sponsored by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

A Duluth High student was among the top ten in the National Council For America's First Freedom essay competition.

A Five Forks Middle student earned a $1,000 National Association of Music Merchants scholarship for her essay on the value of music education.

Students from Mill Creek High, Peachtree Ridge High, and South Gwinnett High were selected as Gates Millennium Scholars.

Two GCPS students earned perfect scores on the ACT college-admissions exam.

Two Sweetwater Middle students earned perfect scores in the National WordMasters Challenge, Gold Division.

37 GCPS students were ranked in the top 10 among students at their class and expericnce level in the state, including a student raking #1 in Georgia in French I and another student ranking #2 in French III. 26 GCPS students were ranked in the top 10 among students at their class and experience level in the nation, including a student ranking #1 in the U.S. in French I.

A Chattahoochee Elementary student and a Brookwood High student were awarded scholarships to attend the Interlochen Arts Center to study music.

The Lanier Middle Percussion Ensemble was invited to perform at Midwest Clinic in Chicago.

A Brookwood High student was honored at the Georgia Ceramic Art Awards and Symposium.

Summerour Middle students won 1st place for their entry in the Water Educational Exchange, sponsored by the CASIE Foundation.

A Parkview High STAR student and teacher were honorerd as state runners-up.

Six students earned 1st place and six earned 2nd place in state etchnical education competition, advancing to SkillsUSA national competition.

Grayson Technical Education Program students earned first place in state for their Agri Fair project.

GCPS Latin students earned 77 Gold awards and 110 Silver awards on the National Latin Exam.

A Berkmar High student won the Georgia Excellence Award for students with disabilities.

Brookwood High takes 1st place in the southeast in the Physics Bowl sponsored by the American Association of Physics Teachers.

GCPS student earned 77 gold medals (with nine perfect scores) and 110 silver medals on the National Latin Exam.

Congratulations to these communities, student-athletes, and coaches on recently winning AAAAA state athletic championships: the Brookwood High Baseball team, the Brookwood High Boys Swim and Dive team, Mill

Creek High Girls Golf team, Collins Hill High Girls Track and Field team, and the Parkview High Girls Soccer team.

Twelve GCPS students were awarded $1,500 Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarships.

Sixteen students and their most influential teachers were honored with Atlanta Toyota Scholarships.

A Brookwood High student was named this year’s Alton C. Crews Scholarship winner; a Meadowcreek High student received the Louise Radloff Scholarship; and a Brookwood High student is the first-ever recipient of the J. Alvin Wilbanks Teaching Scholarship.

A Parkview High student was named 2008 High School Scholar Athlete of the Year by the Atlanta Sports Council.

A team of Parkview High students earned 1st place in the Metro-Atlanta World Quest competition and competed at nationals.

This summer, 101 GCPS students were finalists eligible to participate in the Governor’s Honors Program.

A Collins Hill High student earned 1st place for an entry in the Georgia Commission on the Holocaust writing contest and was honored nationally.

Three GCPS student projects earned top awards in the state History Day competition and advance to nationals.

A Brookwood High student earned 1st place at the Georgia Ceramic Art Awards and Symposium.

A North Gwinnett High student designed the Georgia Youth Art Month Flag.

290 GCPS middle and high school students earned All-State honors in band, chorus, and orchestra.

A student from Grayson High School Technical Education Program earned junior certification through the Georgia Green Industry Association.

The Brookwood High Jazz Combo received an Outstanding Combo Award at festival.

The American Association of School Librarians has recognized Kristie Michalowski of J. C. Magill Elementary with the 2008 Intellectual Freedom Award.

Matt Winking of Phoenix High earned the 2007 Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

The counseling teams at Berkeley Lake Elementary and Peachtree Elementary both achieved a notable first for Gwinnett County Public Schools by being recognized as Best Practices Commendable Program award winners of the Recognized American School Counselors Association (ASCA) Model Program.

A Berkmar High teacher was named 'Teacher of the Year' by the Georgia Association for the Deaf.

A J.E. Richards Middle teacher has been elected to serve a three-year term on the state PAGE board of directors.

Thirty-seven GCPS teachers were selected for the Teachers As Leaders program.

A Creekland Middle teacher served on the state DOE Committee on Middle School Connections Curriculum.

Three local counseling winners were named Region 2 winners and will advance to state competition: Karen Griffith of Berkeley Lake Elementary (Elementary Counselor of the Year), Dr. Helen Clark of Dacula High (Secondary Counselor of the Year), and Keith Chaney, Grayson High principal, (Counseling Advocate of the Year).

J.C. Magill Elementary's media specialist won the 2008 Intellectual Freedom Award.

A team of teachers from Dacula Middle were selected as Most Valuable Teachers by Pearson Science Marketing.

A Peachtree Ridge High Orchestra Teacher will serve as president of the state music association.

W.C. Britt Elementary was recognized by The Alliance for a Healthier Generation for an innovative program that fights obesity-- the program was created by a health teacher from the school.

Thirteen GCPS high schools were ranked among Newsweek’s top 1,300 high schools in the nation.

Lilburn Middle and Louise Radloff Middle recently received the HOST Mentoring and Intervention (M&I) Best Practices Exemplary Award for their use of a mentoring program.

A Duluth High student won first place in a national Holocaust Remembrance Project essay contest.

Brookwood and Duluth high schools were among the top 25 Georgia schools with the highest overall SAT scores. Brookwood, Duluth, Norcross, North Gwinnett, and Parkview high schools were among Georgia schools in the top 25 for average scores on the reading, math, or writing sections of the SAT.

Student projects from Collins Hill High and Norcross High earned top awards in the state History Day competition and advanced to national competition.

Sweetwater Middle and the Safe and Drug Free Schools Office of Gwinnett were awarded the 2007 Jeff L. Townsend Second Step Award.

GCPS’ Comprehensive Annual Financial Report received a certificate of excellence for the 19th year from the Association of School Business Officials.
