Recent State and National Honors and Recognitions...

Students
A Brookwood High student is a finalist for the Woodrow Wilson Community Service Award.

Meadowcreek High accounting students scored in the top 20% in U.S. on the 2011 National Financial Capability Challenge.

A Brookwood High student earned a scholarship from the national Spanish Honor Society.

A Parkview High student earned a national Siemens math and science competition scholarship.

11 Black American students received $2,500 National Achievement Scholarships from the National Merit Scholarship Corporation.

A Collins Hill High student competed in the National History Day competition.

Two Meadowcreek High students won 1st and 3rd places in the 4th Congressional District Art Competition. A student from Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science and Technology won the 7th Congressional District Art competition.

Three Gwinnett students won $100 savings bonds in the National Foundation for Credit Counseling regional poster contest, advancing to national competition.

Gwinnett students from Trickum Middle, Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology, and North Gwinnett High won state and regional recognition in the Istanbul Center essay/art contest. As 1st place winners in the region, two students-- one a high school artist and the other a middle school writer-- earned all-expenses paid trips to Turkey for themselves, a sponsoring teacher, and the superintendent. A 3rd place regional winner in the high school art contest won a trip to Turkey as well, with all expenses paid, except for airfare. These region winners previously won at the state level. A middle school writer also qualified for the trip to Turkey, excluding airfare, with a 2nd place finish at state.

Six GCPS Odyssey of the Mind 1st and 2nd place state competition winners advanced to World Finals.

Meadowcreek High’s FCCLA Culinary Team earned 1st place in state competition and advanced to nationals.

A student from Ivy Creek Elementary, Lovin Elementary and Meadowcreek High received the Georgia Reading Association Bob Jerrold's Award for reading achievement.

51 GCPS students earned recognition for performance on the National German Exam, two earned the state's highest scores.

Students from Gwinnett School of Mathematics, Science, and Technology and Parkview High won a place on the Washington Youth Tour.



Staff
Two GCPS staff members were selected to serve on the National Council on Digital Citizenship and Creative Content, a program that focuses on creative rights in the world of digital citizenship and raising student awareness about proper behavior with technology.

An Online Campus teacher is a finalist for the National Online Teacher of the Year Award from the Southeastern Regional Education Board.

Bay Creek Middle was honored with a Rookie Award at the Power Over Prejudice Summit.

A Riverside Elementary teacher received the John Daughtrey Memorial Award from the Future Problem Solving Program International.

Brookwood High's principal was named Georgia Association of Educational Leaders and Georgia Association of Secondary Principals Outstanding Educator of the Year.

A Creekland Middle assistant principal was named Middle School Assistant Principal of the Year by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

A Nesbit Elementary teacher was named 2010 Elementary Level Art Teacher of the Year and an Osborne Middle teacher was named 2010 Middle Level Art Teacher of the year by the Georgia Art Education Association.

A Grayson Elementary counselor was named State Elementary Counselor of the Year; a Five Forks Middle counselor was named State Middle School Counselor of the Year; and a Berkeley Lake Elementary counselor was named State Writer of the Year.



School
Six GCPS counseling departments earned the Recognized ASCA Model Program (RAMP) National Award from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), while a school that earned RAMP recognition in 2009 is Gwinnett's first school to re-certify as a RAMP school. This award recognizes schools that have excelled in delivering a comprehensive, data-driven counseling program.

14 GCPS high schools were listed among Newsweek's list of the top 1,600 high schools in the nation.

Collins Hill and Parkview boys soccer teams won the 2009-10 Team academic Award sponsored by the National Soccer coaches Association of America.

Norcross High's girls and boys basketball teams won the 2011 state championship.

GCPS have won several AAAAA State Championships including Collins Hill High wrestlers in both dual and traditional meets; Peachtree Ridge High boys swim and dive team and boys track and field; and Brookwood High boys tennis team.

The Gwinnett Heat won 1st place in state in adapted football.

Parkview High's stock market team won 1st place in the Fall Stock Market Game.

Shiloh High Air Force Junior ROTC unit earned the 2009-10 Distinguished Unit Award for outstanding service to the school and community.

North Gwinnett Middle was named a "Breakthrough Middle School" by the Georgia Association of Secondary School Principals.

State championships were won by the Brookwood High Boys Cross Country Team, and Brookwood High Football Team Collins Hill High Girls Golf Team, Girls Softball Team, Boys Soccer Team, and the North Gwinnett High Girls Soccer Team, and Peachtree Ridge High COED Competition Cheerleaders. In addition, Collins Hill High earned the Regions Director's Cup for superior performance.

Several GCPS staff members and PTA units were recognized at the state level including Couch Middle, Outstanding Local Unit-Middle; Couch Middle Principal, Outstanding Principal-Middle school; Camp Creek Elementary, Outstanding School Nurse; and Outstanding District, 12th District Director.



System
GCPS earned a $1.4 million grant from the US Department of Education for 'Teaching American History' staff development project.

The GCPS School Nutrition Program was named a Best Practice Award winner by the Georgia Department of Education School Nutrition Program.

35 GCPS teams raised $10,000 or more for the American Cancer Society, with a total of $1.04 million for
Relay For Life.
