School meals offer 5 components daily: protein, fruit, vegetables, grains, and milk. So what makes a lunch? To qualify as a lunch a student must take at least 3 of the 5 offered components, one of which must be a fruit or a vegetable. However, a student may take all 5 of the components to form a more balanced meal. Now is a good time to educate your child on how to select a healthy and balanced meal. Please note that students are not required to take a lunch but if they take a lunch then they must have a fruit or vegetable as one of the components. Any combination of items that do not qualify as a lunch will be charged at the ala carte price. Student lunch prices will remain $2.00 at the elementary level and $2.25 at the secondary level for SY13.

The Gwinnett County School Nutrition Program has over 1,600 Food Service Professionals providing meal service in 128 schools.  In SY11 the School Nutrition Programs served on average 180,642 meals per day.  In SY11 there were 22,231,157 lunches and 9,917,172 breakfasts served! The School Nutrition Program (SNP) operates fiscally independent within the District, paying for all direct expenses, administrative costs, and utilities. The SY12 annual budget exceeds $88,000,000.
	Revenue sources include local meal sales (30.60%) and state and federal revenues (69.40%). Federal reimbursement subsidizes all reimbursable (student) meals. This allows for meals to be offered free and at a reduced price to qualifying students as well as at a reasonable price for paying students. The USDA Commodity program is another form of federal assistance that allows for additional meal price reduction (.2175 per plate).
