Assessment Option(s):
Create a house that reflects the child's personality. Make a street and compare and contrast the houses.

Activity:

The teacher will read The Big Orange Splot , by Pinkwater to the students. Discuss with the students how they felt as the houses on Mr. Plumbean's street changed from being all alike to changing to reflect the personality of the people who lived in them. The teacher will explain that when others can accept something that is different, it is known as "tolerance". The teacher will ask the students for examples of tolerance; we don't all wear the same clothes, we don't have the same hair color, etc.

Each child will create their own house from a cereal box. The children can bring items from home to help them with this, as well as using materials from the classroom-construction paper scraps, stickers, tissue paper etc. The house must reflect their likes and interests. When all the houses are complete the students will line them up on a sheet of bulletin board paper that has been made to look like a street.

The teacher will ask the students how the street looks. Is it more interesting because the houses are different? The students will talk about how the houses are alike and different. During this time the teacher will emphasize tolerance for the work of others.
