Assessment Option(s):
Draw a picture to show how Stellaluna regained her self-respect (by acting like a bat instead of a bird), and write a sentence about it.

Activity:
Ask the students how they feel when they act in an appropriate way. Discuss examples of actions that would help them feel this way. The teacher will explain that the examples are ways to gain "self-respect." She will instruct the students to listen to the story for the first time for enjoyment.
  • The second time the story is read, the teacher will ask the students to listen for the times that Stellaluna acted like a bird and the times she acted like a bat. The responses will be recorded on a chart. The teacher will read the responses back to the children and ask them if they think Stellaluna was happy when acting in each of these ways. These responses will be noted on the chart. When these are reviewed, the children may see that Stellaluna was more happy when she was acting like a bat (and not doing things that made her feel uncomfortable).
  • To review the lesson, the students will be asked to draw a picture, and write a sentence about Stellaluna after she had gained her self-respect. On the back of the paper, the students will draw a picture of themselves doing something that creates self-respect in them.
