Oral questions and student responses: ie. - How do you show respect for yourself? How can you show respect for others? Shared writing activity on how students can show respect for others.

Activity:
Introduction: Write self -respect or respect for others on the board - orally define - "high or special regard for self or others" and give examples.

1. Introduce and read CHRYSANTHEMUM .
2. Ask questions:
At the end of the story, how do you know Chrysanthemum respected herself? (she loved her name)
How did Chrysanthemum's classmates show a lack of respect for her? (they made fun of her name)
How did the teacher restore Chrysanthemum's self-respect? (shared her long name and named her daughter Chrysanthemum)
Follow-up/Challenge
Have the students orally sequence the main events of the story or have them draw pictures of the main events in sequential order.
Assessment:
Have the students share how they show respect for themselves and others. On chart paper assist the students in writing down their thoughts or have them dictate their thoughts and sign their names.
Extension:
Read ROSA PARKS and discuss how she showed self-respect.
Read the UGLY DUCKLING and discuss the duckling's lack of self-respect and how he was not respected by others.
Compare and contrast the stories.
